Dog racing in Wisconsin "On the verge of extinction" |
|
http://greenbaypressgazette.com/article/20090616/GPG0101/90616035/1978Kaukauna was the first pari-mutuel facility to close, but it wasn't the last.
Wisconsin Dells Greyhound Park ended its run in 1996, St. Croix Meadows in Hudson lasted until 2001 and Geneva Lakes Greyhound Park went dark in 2006.
The lone remaining track, Dairyland Greyhound Park in Kenosha, is hemorrhaging money.
The track lost $3.4 million in 2008 after losing $2.8 million in 2007. Dairyland officials still are hopeful that a proposal by the Menominee Indian tribe to open a huge casino and convention center at the track will be approved. In January, the federal government rejected the latest bid by the Menominees to operate such a facility.

Unfortunately, greyhound racing is suffering around the country.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with racing greyhounds. It's a fine sport and exciting way to gamble. The problems are with unscrupulous breeders and trainers.

|
If you want to watch sighthounds run, contact your local chapter of the AKC or UKC and ask for the schedule of lure coursing events, where well-treated dogs are allowed to run as part of active and healthy lives spent with families who love them as companions--without anyone benefiting financially from their abuse.

lurchers love to course, i dont see all dogs as companions the way you do, some dogs are working dogs some are play dogs, my dog is a working dog and loves nothing more than to track and hunt.

|
liking, growing up we had greyhounds, lurchers, pitbulls, terriers, all were working dogs and all had to earn their keep. You would probuably think my hound is not well treated as hes not kept in the house and he dosent get to play with the kids, as i said hes a working dog and his thing is hunting, thats all he wants to do.

My dog's herding trainer has maremmas to keep the coyotes and bears from killing the sheep. They live outside 24-7 in the field. They're happy. I don't see anything wrong with that.
Just curious what "jobs" you had the pitbulls doing?

My dog wants to track. And does. She also wants to lay across my lap when I'm reading or watching TV, curl up in her crate with her cat buddy, and sleep under my covers. I'll bet, if your dog knew such niceties existed, he would, too. Oh, and if I bring an animal into my life, he or she doesn't have to earn its keep. What a primitive way to think.

We kept dogs as pets. And the situation that my family fled was less than secure, yet my family made sure the dogs were tended to the best they could be - and that included contact from an owner. As social creatures, dogs NEED contact.
And this whole thing about the pits, well it is just cruel and you should be treated the way you treated them.

As someone who has had family members involved in cock-fighting when I was younger, I can tell you that I stood up for the animals. I was under 10 when I made placards and protested my uncle's Friday night fights. He hated it, and the people laughed, but I knew I was right.
I also refused to eat certain things because I considered them pets, and not to be used as food. I didn't starve. I would rather gnaw on a stalk of sugar cane than eat the rabbit that played with all afternoon.
Also, I find your attitude towards your own dogs rather unpleasant, however, that is really not my business. Unless you mistreat them. And it seems that you may be - just sayin'.

My Father's granddad came from Sicily, where they were dirt poor farmers who did hunt, with their dogs who were treated like family.
I myself grew up quite poor, and we often didn't have enough food during strike times, We had dogs that were also hunting dogs -- Springers -- and they lived inside with us.

my family fled the Dominican Republic to escape Trujillo. He was quite smitten with my grandmother and her sisters and "invited" them to parties.
We may have been "white" but our family was certainly not the epitome of the elite Dominican, and left. My great-grandparents kept their dogs in the house with them. Fed them table scraps, but at least they were fed. In fact, they were over-fed chubby little things, but sooooooo loved.

It's not necessary.
We had a dog that was thrown away by one of those scumbags. She was a loved member of the family, and would've ripped the throat out of anybody she needed to, because she would have defended us to the death.
I grew up with assholes with fighting pits and the idiots who kept them chained up as "guard dogs." Those people are dog-abusing scum.

Their main diet is based on a boiled corn meal called "sadza", with other fruits and veggies. Meat was an occasional treat...and their dogs live in their huts (the Ndau word is "yawe") with them. You should go tell them the appropriate ways to treat dogs. I'm sure they'd appreciate it.

Like health care, etc. I guarantee you grew up with more resources than I did. You keep posting things acting like you were running from the Nazis. No matter the prejudices against these demographics, you still had access to some of the best social systems in the world. Also, I do believe dog baiting is illegal in at least Ireland and Britian, and I bet most other countries you were in.
I am done with your excuses. You are ridiculous.

81. lol tell you what, you go talk to the social services even in your area |
|
and they will tell you they never see travelers, we dont exactly want to be on government rolls etc, i think you will be surprised at how many are in your area that the powers that be have no idea about, but i think your bigotry towards people who dont espouse what you think has blinded you.

59. I always wondered why racing dogs weren't treated like Thoroughbred horses |
|
One would think dogs who were treated well would beat those who are abused. I was thinking maybe I could clean up and get dog fixes at the same time!

Look at what happens to them when they don't pan out on the track.

And I wish rodeos and circuses that use animals would fail, too, but that's unlikely in the near future.

One of the tracks in Wisconsin is where our greyhound Emma Kate came from. She lived to almost thirteen and was the sweetest dog I have ever owned. She loved our other dogs, cats and paid no attention to our birds. This "sport" should have been gone a long time ago.

21. So... What's happening to the animals? |
|
I assume a few will get adopted... there's no shortage of greyhound adoption programs. But the rest?

I can't exactly get all "Yay, the track is closing!" with that sort of knowledge at hand.

35. Do you know how many dogs are exterminated to get 1 successful race at a track? |
|
Not every dog born to a litter goes on to race. Matter of fact, very few are.

Many of the breeders and trainers will be out of work and the hounds will become a liability. I have adopted three greys to date and all have been wonderful family members and spoiled mercilessly, and they deserved it. They also appreciate being able to spend there remaining days in leisure.
If Hollywood would make a movie about how cool adopted greys are, their problems would be over. Until then, there will never be enough rescue programs.
