We Have A New National Leader On Single Payer Health Care (If We Will Get Behind Her)

We Have A New National Leader On Single Payer Health Care (If We Will
Get Behind Her)

Please read this whole alert as there is a new video issue ad, a new
"text to" cell phone number, a new action page, a critical and
groundbreaking conceptional analysis you will find NOWHERE else and
more.

First, Marcy Winograd has produced a stunning new issue advocacy
video ad on single payer health care. We want to make this a national
example of what EVERYBODY needs to be doing in their own districts
right now, for us to win the policy change we deserve. In just 30
seconds Marcy takes control of the terms of the health care debate
and redefines them. And you really need to see this video right now.

New Single Payer Advocacy Video:
http://winograd4congress.com/petitions/single_payer_video.php

Please watch the video above. And then do everything you can to help
get it out there, propagate the link, tell your friends about it, or
if you can make a contribution to help get it on the air.

Marcy's underlying point is resoundingly simple. To get Congress to
actually act on good policy, each individual member must feel their
OWN re-election directly threatened if they do not. That is why Marcy
is about to start running issue challenge campaign ads a YEAR before
the primary election in CA-36.

And Marcy has tremendous credibility issuing this challenge to the
Democratic incumbent, Jane Harman, having pulled 38% against her
opponent in 2006. Harman is one of the worst of the worst, having
interceded with the New York Times to stop the publication of a story
on George Bush that would have defeated him back in 2004, having
being briefed on all the torture as it was happening and doing
nothing to stop it, and slavishly serving AIPAC to the detriment of
the national interests of her own constituents.

There is a massive industry sponsored conspiracy afoot, to pass off
some kind of watered down, phony health care reform bill as the
change we believed in. And it all revolves around two MEANINGLESS
marketing buzz words they are spending millions of dollars to implant
in our brains, and you may not have realized how sinister these two
words were until you read this entire alert.

And the two words they are trying to make come out of all our mouths
are "quality, affordable".

Those two words mean NOTHING and stand only for rejection of any
fundamental change, and yet they are propagating wildly in the mass
media, driven by slick diversionary ads, and perhaps you have
unknowingly and unconsciously even uttered them yourself already.
Nobody can "afford" NOT to have health care, regardless of the cost,
up to their entire net worth. And we don't have a shortage of
"quality" doctors and nurses, our problem is getting heartless
insurance megacorporations to authorize our quality doctors to treat
us.

It is no secret that the most mortal sworn enemies of real health
care reform got together and concocted this deceptive marketing
campaign, as they saw that the compelling majority of the American
people favored and were pressing for REAL change. They literally sat
down in a room to conspire on what marketing words they could use to
SELL their status quo system of gouging us as something new and
different.

And if we are to win, those two words must NEVER pass our lips ever
again.

What Marcy does so brilliantly in this new video ad is lay claim to
and define two truly NEW words, "economical and efficient", to
COUNTERBRAND single payer health care with what it really represents,
so that all America can really understand the difference. The disease
in health care is the 30% of our resources that medical industry
paper pushers steal from every health care dollar. Single payer
health care would save that money, thus it is "economical". And by
eliminating insurance conglomerate middlemen, it would be more
"efficient". That is the only cure for what ails us and there is no
other real cure.

New Single Payer Advocacy Video:
http://winograd4congress.com/petitions/single_payer_video.php

Do you get it? The enemies of real change have been trying to brand
single payer health care with supposedly negative coined expressions
like "socialized medicine", while at the same time branding their own
fake reform initiative with those OTHER words (the Q word and the A
word), which we must ALL agree to never utter again. Do you get it?
Do you really get it? It is the marketing campaign of our policy
change enemies, and for us to prevail, the Q word and the A word must
be surgically excised entirely from our own discourse and replaced
with the "economical and efficient" mental transplant.

The fact is while Congress fools around trying to concoct a phony
"public" option, the original bill proposed in 2005 for single payer
health care, H.R. 676 STILL has more co-sponsors than any other. So
we need to CONTINUE to press our support for HR 676. Each of us must
make a point of submitting an action page on this like clockwork once
a week, and we will have new action page links on this for you once a
week from now on. Here is the latest action page Marcy has on her
site.

New HR 676 Action Page:
http://winograd4congress.com/petitions/pnum995.php

To further support this whole initiative there is a new cell phone
"text to" number. All you need to do is text the word "HR676" to
30644, and we will get you in touch with Marcy to help you organize
in your own districts. We need everyone in the country who cares
about real health care reform to text "HR676" to the 30644 short
code, to give this out on radio shows, at public events, and
everywhere else we can.

THEN, what Marcy will do is put people in their own Congressional
districts in touch with each other, to empower you to do exactly what
Marcy herself is doing in her own district. We literally need serious
candidates NOW, to start running their own issue advocacy ads on
single payer right now. The American people are behind us if we just
get out there and represent them.

Let Marcy be a national example of just what we ALL need to be doing.
Every bought off member of Congress must feel the heat on the single
payer issue in a very personal way from a direct challenger breathing
down their neck on this issue right now. Then and only then will be
get the change we believed in.

And yes, you can also respond to this action through the new Twitter
gateway. Just send the following Twitter reply, and add any personal
comment you like.

@cxs #p995

And if you want a step by step explanation of how to set up the
Twitter thing here is the link for that.

19. let's not forget she decided to run exactly 3 months before the Primary with no money and STILL
received 38% of the votes. Pretty amazing in my book. Haven't ever seen it done before in this country with an entrenched incumbent , have you?
AND as a result Jane Harman started calling Marcy in to "negotiate", knowing the huge base of support Marcy has. Marcy, as a real representative of the people would do, said open your office to all your citizens, not just to me. Jane was so threatened by that 38% that she changed a few war positions.
This time we have no money, and a year!
WIN MARCY WIN!

21. So what? They were wrong. Another election is coming. It can turn out differently.
Edited on Thu Jun-18-09 06:45 PM by JackRiddler
In the meantime, of course, we've learned that the NSA was spying on Harman and caught her promising services for AIPAC, after which Gonzalez had the investigation into her dropped and she turned into the big champion of the Bush wiretapping program? Pelosi booted her out of line for the Intel Cmte chairmanship. Maybe Harman's time is done.

Anyway, is she supposed to be an example of a good Democratic politician?

1. Are you proposing that the Democrats who voted against Harman were somehow less Democratic, because she won the primary anyway.

2. Would you prefer to install the richest of all Congress critters and one of the most corrupt, a corporate MIC tool and AIPAC gopher, Jane "All the Way with the NSA" Harman, in her seat for life, perhaps?

Oh, and let's not forget the Jane Harman Thought Crimes Bill of 2007 (HR 1955, thankfully died in committee).

24. A few updates need to be made to this list...

Tom Lantos has passed away since then. Probably should call Jackie Speier and make a point that she supports this bill in his honor.

Hilda Solis is now in Obama's cabinet.

Al Wynn was voted out in the primaries by Donna Edwards (who is BTW a far better grass roots Dem than he was and is also in this list)

14. Posted early this morning.... some/same argument:
For a party that claims to be universally pro-life, pro-family and fiscally conservative, the Republicans should be working to steamroll any health care proposal that doesn't provide for affordable and mandatory health coverage for every child in this country - which, by extension, would include their families. Any scheme so expensive that it threatens the ability of parents (or other caregivers) to provide adequate care, food, shelter or a stable home environment for our children should be in the same round file as the proposals to impeach a certain former pResident (albeit, for very different reasons).

'Affordable' would entail the exclusion of the corporate insurance behemoths from any public option. The corporations currently skim between $0.30 and $0.42 from every health care dollar, and cost nearly as much on the side of the health care providers in administrative fees, write offs and lost income. 'Affordable' would also require that everyone be covered whether unemployed, under employed or making minimum wage at a full-time job. However, at a 60% to 84% discount over the cost of corporate coverage, a public option might make affordable care a reality for many of the 47 million currently without, and before consideration of any taxpayer supplement.

Further streamlining the claims process, software and oversight for the existing MediCare model (at a current cost of $0.045/$1.00) would further reduce any supposed public burden. We're already paying the per-capita costs of "first dollar" coverage, all that's required is an efficient method of allocating those dollars. Blue Cross Blue Shield, et al, has failed in finding that efficient method. Not that they were looking.

We can't do much about our own rabidly corporate (D)s who are fighting to maintain the profitability of the insurance industry to the detriment of the people, but we can embarrass more of our own to prevent them jumping on the corporate bandwagon at the last minute - the ones who haven't "come out" just yet. Additionally, there are also a handful of actual, honorable Republicans out there and, with the party as fractured as it is, another round of elections coming up shortly and the depressing prospect of doing anything more than simply holding on to their seats, the same logic might work - especially for those who hail from depressed areas. Too many of their constituents have lost their jobs - a public option for health care might be their last lifeline before total destitution. These Congresscritters just have to sell it to the Ditto-heads on a level they'll understand, if such a thing is even possible.

If we can help (or outright embarrass) enough of the reasonable, intelligent (R)s to cross over to the light, we just might have enough votes to overcome the Corporatists on both sides of the aisle. Then we can work on getting rid of the whole Corporate gang in 2010, 2012 and 2014. Oh, what a wonderful world that would be.

Yes, there are many other issues on the burner right now, but we've got this one chance to get health care reformed correctly, or we're going to have to wait another twenty years for the chance. I too want BushCo* in prison, DOMA and DADT tossed on the shitpile of history, "Teh War on Drugs/Poor People" ended, the Pentagon scaled back to subsistence levels and our national reputation as the shining beacon of Democracy and Justice restored. But each of those is an ongoing war with many battles to be fought and, many of which, we are already winning at the state level. Universal health care is different: We can't afford to fuck it up this time. Even if enacted on a state-by-state basis, the insurance companies will fight tooth and nail for their share to the very end, bankrupting states, as necessary, to send a message to the others: "Don't Go There." What other industry has 15% of the GDP at their disposal to spend in fighting for their very survival?

I have described this as a fight to the death (of the corporations). Others have defined it as a death sentence hanging over the 'head' of the insurance companies. I would like to think the 15% of our fellow citizens who have no coverage at all and the 62% of those who have gone into bankruptcy because of medical bills would have stronger, better words for it.

Edited on Thu Jun-18-09 06:26 PM by GreenTea
Republicans & insurance companies are fighting, lying and spending billions to make sure there is no public option....by the time Winograd if and when she takes office in Jan 2011 it'll be far too late....

Spend your money on action committees doing something NOW and get out there and fight for a public option.

Republicans are fighting to keep insurance companies for profit only, as our only option - Public option would mean competition for the insurance corporations, republicans hate competition, they prefer a rigged game, collusion, no competition means sky high profits because there's no place else for one to go...the insurance companies, like all corporations & monopolies set prices among themselves to keep profits as high as possible, fuck sick people, it's about PROFITS!

It's should be a safety net for people who get sick and the insurance companies and republicans think it should be about profits & privatization....to charge outrageous fees, throw people off policies if the hospital bill is too large and not accepting people if they are sick, that's the republican plan health care, corporate profit....

"For middle-class Americans, health insurance offers little protection," he added.

"Nationally, a quarter of firms cancel coverage immediately when an employee suffers a disabling illness; another quarter do so within a year," the report reads.

We are fucked again if we get no public option, right back where we stated at the mercy of the insurance companies...out not for your well being, but for profits and corporations always cut corners and screw us at every turn to profit ever more.

We need to support them in every race where true Democrats run against republicans that claim to be Democrats simply to get elected (DLC, Blue-Dog and other stealth Republicans).

The republicans in our party all have to be replaced if we wish to yield a majority in more than name only.

Time to retake the party and pass worker friendly legislation.

I will remember Marcy Winograd. I am impressed by what I see so far.

29. Kick for Marcy!!!
I know her. She's a GREAT gal! Her campaign a couple of years ago didn't unseat jane harman, unfortunately, but made harman pause a moment, and edged back a tiny bit from the hard-"right" stance she always clung to. Marcy ran on an anti-war platform. Ol' jane hadn't expected to have ANY opposition. She actually had to fight a little.
