Which Rep & Senator will (has?) introduced bill to repeal DOMA? |
|
Obama is putting it on Congress, Reid has already put DADT back on the White House.
So who is actually going to do something? And how do we make them? I've been bitching about the situations as much as anyone, but the reality is we're going to have to force them to do it.
So who do we start with? Who do we pressure?

1. Only Congress can do anything about either DOMA or DADT |
|
Both are laws, therefore both need an act of Congress to overturn them. So we need to pressure the really liberal Senators and Representatives into actually bringing them to the floor. Obama can only do so much. Granted, he could be a hell of a lot more vocal on gay rights than he has been to apply some pressure himself, but he can't actually do anything unless Congress puts it on the table.

Obama can at the very least, suspend the expulsion of military personnel, he is after all CIC. Also, read up: http://www.palmcenter.org/node/1286

2. Bernie Sanders was on the Bill Press show this AM and said |
|
that they have the language ready in the Senate to overturn DOMA but they do not have the votes to pass it. THERE'S NOT ONE PUB WILLING TO GO ALONG WITH IT and he's fairly sure that's the same case in the House.
After listeningb to him, I'm convinced that it's NOT Obama dragging his feet on this...IT'S THE PUBS AGAIN!

3. What ever happened to bringing it up for a vote and seeing where the chips lie. |
|
I want to see how many Dems vote against it. I want to see how close they are. I want to use it against the people who vote against it.

6. Sanders is always straightforward |
|
But even taking away the Repub. votes, don't we have enough ourselves? So part of the problem is recalcitrant Dems who won't go along with this. And a Senate leader who's not exactly a beacon of light wrt gay rights.

7. I believe Bernie did mention that there were several Dems that wouldn't |
|
sign on either. I think THAT's what they all mean when they say "We just don't have the votes." I know you don't want to hear this, but some of those Dems who were elected in vvery red areas of the country won't sign onto any gay rights bill because not only do THEY not agree with the bill but their constituents dont either.

8. Oh, I know. I suspect that's where the problem is |
|
We actually ought to be able to bring the Maine Senators over to our side. But that leaves an awful lot of those conservative Dems who still haven't evolved past their biases to see that this is a simple issue of civil rights.
