8. You could fly over there and shoot a few protesters yourself. |
|
Your American IP address will be used by Revolutionary Guard intelligence officers as proof that the Americans are behind the protests, and the tanks should be sent in.

11. You could tweet from here (after changing your settings) and you could be an Iranian tweeter too! |
|
Wondering if Chavez' riot troops have arrived in Iran yet (as per tweets posted here on the weekend).

2. An interesting lack of interest here on DU. |
|
I'm not seeing the same lack of interest on any other forum. Really strange.

23. hoax revelations scatter herd |
|
what are you talking about? it's been a color revolution frenzy here the last few days, but now that it is being revealed that the 'revolution' was a hoax, the stampeding herd is understandably relaxing and turning reflective.

3. Would think thousands here are concerned |
|
Obsessing isn't healthy when we can't do much from where we are. Many of us have LOTS of browser tabs open to follow news but come to DU to let off steam and calm down.
Just so ya know, an absence of posts here doesn't mean lack of interest or involvement in other places.
Lots of us are VERY worried.

4. It logically follows that seeing Iranians actually DOING SOMETHING makes Americans feel petty/weak |
|
Not that many would ever admit to that! ...but yeah, steal an "election" there, and apparently their citizenry doesn't just passively, obediently roll over on command like the populace here does - and not just once, but twice! That reveals tough-talk, Macho America to be the fucking sad joke it is.

7. I think that is because of the difference in how one lives in the US.. |
|
compared to how one lives in Iran...or else ware in the world...When people are for the most part happy, fed, and have a feeling of individual freedom (which may have been taken for granted) they tend to roll over and see what happens tomorrow...at least that is how I think about this particular difference in citizen action.

9. There's a huge age discrepancy too: Iran has many more young people, which = LESS "moderates." |

14. Yep. And if you dig back through the DU archives enough you'll... |
|
...see how many times demonstrations were absolutely shit on. Or the organized effort to spook DUers who were planning on attending demonstrations by calling the march organizers Communists.
For perceived freedom in Iran, DU has no problem being a distribution point for instructions on setting up cyber attacks, opening proxy servers and in many ways- breathlessly relaying news as though the disturbance/revolution (too early to tell, for me) in Iran was something which touched every corner of the world. And maybe it does, that's not a point I intend to haggle on.
But...when it comes to our OWN country...when it's Americans who might be called on to get into the streets or god forbid launch similar style cyber attacks against our own corrupt government (not that I'm advocating that- I'm drawing parallels)...well, you know that idea is just right fucking out, of course.
Shit, look how the majority of DUers treat CodePink. Somehow I think DUers don't just like green over pink, if you get my drift.
It's the freedom-fighter from behind the keyboard... I've written before about how seductive it is to believe that you can change the world from your computer and the opiate smoke that fills the nostrils of so many here who are too frightened or too lazy to get out of their house, get into the streets and march for the Liberty their ancestors died for.
Do I want freedom in Iran? Sure. Were all of the candidates in the Iranian election hand-picked by Iranian clerics before they could enter the contest? Of course. The belief that this will lead to the meaningful change in the core of how politics and religion enmesh in Iran is absurd.
It's like the addict who doesn't have the courage to change their life by attempting to quit but who, curiously, will go to great lengths (within comfort's levels, of course) to encourage others to do so.

16. Well, either that, or there have been so many DUers who |
|
have invested in the belief that Ahmadinajad had to be good because Bush was so bad, and are now slightly perturbed/embarrassed that the Iranian people seem to disagree with them. As I said, it's getting tens of thousands of posts on other boards.

18. I disagree with your premise |
|
What is happening in Iran is in protest to what they perceive (and I agree) as a frauduent election. That's the only issue that's being protested.
When I went to an anti-war rally in San Francisco, I turned away when I saw the ANSWER morons putting a swastica on an Israeli flag. Then add in the Free Mumia people and assorted other fringe elements and the whole thing is an unfocused and to many people, insulting mess. Happened over and over again with the anti-war rallies. While I respect the Code Pink message, their antics take away from their message - that's their fault.
So your comparison between Iran and the US falls flat.

The media's major focus on the issue?
Discussion of the crackdown, including the deaths of those standing up against the stolen election?
No, obviously none of us must care. (sarcasm)

...as an American who doesn't read or speak Farsi and having never spent any time immersed in Persian culture I must honestly say I really have no idea exactly what is going on over there so I respectfully do not butt in and instead mind my own business as I would hope they would do if a similar situation developed in my home country.
