Easy things to do today to lower your impact AND improve your budget!
It's completely obvious but I'll say it anyways :D : Almost everything that improves your bottom line also helps the environment.

The Wife and I have been making some changes in our daily lives and feeling good about living healthier, helping our budget, and helping the environment at the same time. I will share with you some of the simple changes we've made around the home, and I hope that you will share your tips as well!

I know that we haven't done anything spectacular here... but for people who have never done these things: you would be shocked at how much fun you'd have and at how much you'd save.

1) Moved downtown - now we're walking to the grocery store, she's walking to work, and we walk to go out. We burn less gas, burn more calories, and actually spend less money on food! By carrying our own food we buy less and less goes to waste. All of this saves us money and has big impacts for the environment.

We also don't put every veggie in a stupid plastic bag. It occured to me awhile back - why in the hell do I need to put an eggplant in a bag? It didn't get here in a bag, and I'm just going to wash it when I cook it anyways  what is it with the stupid veggie bags?

Oh, and did I mention that it's a helluvah lotta fun to live downtown? Shakespeare in the park this weekend, and a free glassblowing expedition with beer for sale... werd.

2) Cook more - we eat tastier and healthier food, save a lot of money, and can cook a vat of soup or a caserole which lasts for days! We're saving a ton of money, losing weight, and having fun trying new recipes.

And lets face it, most Murkan restaurants only season their food with fat and salt! Get a recipe for something you love to eat, follow it to the letter, and see if you don't have fun, eat healthier, save money, and get one of the tastiest meals you've ever had!

3) Eat vegetarian lunches - I cook the dinners, and the Mrs. is learning to cook all sorts of delicious vegetarian lunches like antipastos, eggplant parmesan, etc. I don't get that afternoon slump from overeating... I actually get a burst of energy after lunch now!

And of course it's cheap, healthy, and better for the environment than eating a greasy cow mash from the brazillian rainforest!

4) Buy thriftshop and garage sale stuff - it's fun to search for, cheap as dirt, and with a little polish you would be amazed at what a $20 bookshelf looks like! All the fun of shopping and buying stuff without the environmental impact or budget crunch. Good times!

5) Have more sex (with protection) - you don't need electricity (well it's optional anyways), gasoline (I hope it's optional), and for most people you only need a minimum of petroleum products. You lose weight, feel great, it's free (well it should be), and good for the environment (again - with protection).

6) Play a board game - do you even remember what movie it was you saw last week? seriously though.

7) Kill your TV - we are now learning a foreign language, having much more of #5, walking the dogs more, have both started going back to school, enjoying rock climbing, and getting a LOT more out of life. Our relationship is better... everything is better without TV. Fucking demon appliance that thing.

Seriously people kill that damn thing. Do your budget, your career, the environment, your sexlife, hell... do everything and everyone a favor and kill your goddamn tv!

It's sucking your life away. Kill it now!

8) Sweat. We live in Arizona. We run the air for aout 2 hours every day. Other than that we hang out naked and sweat. It's awesome... when you're hot you actually get sort of a buzz. You drink a lot of water and get all gooey and stupid. Dig it man.

Comfort is overrated. Comfort is an easy to remember word for that sensation you get when you're not experiencing everything that life has to offer.

---

Please share with me!

1. Great tips
I am a big fan of grocery shopping on foot or by bicycle. Do it 3 or 4 times a week and only buy what you need. Avoid waste.

I definitely agree we should all cut down on TV and don't leave it on the whole time. It eats up your time and drains your energy (cable news can sap your will to live).

The good news is that you can watch Jon Stewart (and Stephen Colbert) online. Watch full episodes at www.thedailyshow.com

But a TV set and a DVD player are a great way to enjoy movies / documentaries or drama series at home (who wants to sit in a movie theater?)

But instead of buying new DVDs the whole time we should be trading them and borrowing from one another.

I agree that very few movies (I mean mainstream hollywood output) are actually worth watching.

What board games would you recommend? Chess rocks! B-)

4. We've been playing a lot of scrabble and monopoly lately hehe
And we have this one pirate game we got for 15 bucks where you have a bunch of spring loaded cannons that you fire at each other's boats and forts... it's made for 5 year olds and it forkin rocks lol.

For the DVD's we've found a place here in Tucson called Bookmans that you can sell books, dvds, and games to and you get a lot more for trade than purchase. It still costs a little, but it's a helluvah lot more reasonable than blockbuster :D

I swear though: living cheap is living better!

2. I wish I could do most of those things but I can't.....
Edited on Fri Jun-19-09 03:21 AM by Joe the Liberal
1. Don't have the money to move anywhere, period.
2. My bro does all the grocery shopping and I'm not a good cook. :7
3. Again my bro does the grocery shopping and he doesn't buy vegetarian stuff, unfortunately for me. :(
4. This I can do.
5. This I can do.
6. Wow I haven't played a board game in so long, come to think of it I don't even think I have one. Plus there isn't anyone to play with......well no one who likes playing them anymore anyway.
7. I try not to watch too much TV, but I can't just get rid of it even if I wanted too, it ain't mine.
8. I suppose I can do this but I hate the heat x(

However I have done other things, such as started going to the gym more which has worked out well for me and I enjoy going. I'm trying to learn how to Rollerblade but it's been slow.

You got some good ideas there Indenturedebtor which I would love to try but I'm in no position to do so at the moment, perhaps some time in the future I will be. :)

5. Thanks Joe :D For the board games if you wanted to
you could get like 15 of them at goodwill for 20 bucks or so!

We hadn't played any since we were kids and we're really really enjoying them now that we're playing again!

4 dollar bottle of wine from trader joes and a board game is a good time hehehhehehe.

3. Ah! Arizona now I get it...
I live in the Burbs. East coast Burbs. My wife works in Rhode Island, I work in Mass.

Moving into the city would not be helpful.

In Arizona, the cities are spread so far ( at least the parts I visited ), beautiful country but spread out.

We do almost everything on the list, (Note to self: we gotta do the sex thing more...), but really enjoy thrift shop/flea mkts. It's exercise and fun looking for old things, many of which end up on Ebay...

7. No thanks..
I'd rather be off the grid, on acreage, harvesting my own food, and conducting my business over the net. Urban life is killing me.
Peace,
