Census Bureau: Older Population To Triple By 2050 (ruh roh)

The U.S. Census Bureau released a report Tuesday projecting a significant increase in the world's 65 and older population in the upcoming years.

The group's population is expected to reach 1.53 billion by the year 2050, three times more than the 516 million alive today. By mid-century, 16 percent of the world's population is expected to be 65 or older.

In the United States, the size of the group is expected to rise to more than double the current amount, expanding from 39 million in 2009 to 89 million by 2050

5. Don't say that, it makes me anxious
I already feel like a time bomb at 50. Will it be my heart? My lungs? A stroke? It takes all the self help and therapeutic tools I acquired in the 1980's to mantra my way out of depression, to close my eyes at night and hope to see the morning.

2. Misleading.... the percentage isn't going up, just the raw numbers...
...but so are the raw numbers for EVERY age group.

7. The percentage, too. That's the global trend.
And in the U.S., there are two drivers:
1) the aging of the population, the tendency of every cohort to live longer; and
2) the size of the baby-boomer cohorts (and later the echo-boomer cohorts).

Of course, global warming may reverse this -- humans may no longer tend to live longer, and our numbers may not be sustainable in any case.

3. Before saying anything else, remember that you'll be among them -- if you're lucky.
Of course, you may instead experience the alternative to growing old.

6. 65 is the new 50. I"ve actually seen some 60 year old men who were kind of hot.
Of course, I might simply be looking at them through older eyes.

12. By 2015, the need for PC technicians would be greater than ever before...

well, in all honesty they said so in 1999...

I find such statistics to be mired in current or past trends, without thinking of the future.

I have to wonder if they have some thinking of the future... which is why the future is web app-based and increasingly free from Windows PC/distributed computing dominance...

14. Built-in population numbers
When a population grows rapidly, there's a greater proportion of younger people, e.g., Saudi Arabia

Similarly, when it slows in growth and starts to contract, there's a greater proportion of older people, e.g., Japan

Comes with the territory...
