Who was Sanford's Dem opponent in the last election?

I'd like to look up why he/she was perceived as so bad and Sanford was perceived as so good.

Thanks in advance.

1. Tommy Moore

Moore had a reputation in South Carolina political circles for being a pro-business, right-of-center Democrat, who was conservative on social issues (such as abortion and gay rights), but moderate-to-liberal on fiscal and economic matters (such as taxes and public education). These positions put the Aiken senator squarely at odds with the incumbent Mark Sanford, who had pushed for lower taxes and school vouchers.

4. and right after he lost
he took a high-paying job as a DC lobbyist for the payday lending industry. The guy who will be the Dem candidate this time is a much better candidate.

6. most likely candidate
is Vince Sheheen. His Uncle was Speaker of the House for a long time back in the 70s and 80s.

2. Sanford had also served 3 terms as a US Congressman -- higher profile
Represented District 1 (Charleston).

Tommy Moore is now a predator I mean president of a Payday Lender company.

7. The problem is that the Democratic Party
in SC is generally a group of ineffective twits. Some of them have been around forever. Both Carol and Don Fowler have been around since the dawn of time. The party is their little show. Nobody really rocks the boat.

I am so over them after they didn't run any decent candidate against Lindsey Graham in the 2008 election. He isn't beloved in the state, but as a Republican he gets by. The candidate who ended up running against Graham was a Ron Paul supporter who switched to the Democratic side. He was the only person who showed any real interest because apparently the Fowlers couldn't find anybody with some recognition to run against Graham. That was shameful and inexcusable. Even if Graham hadn't been beaten, the Dems would have had someone with recognition and experience to run for office later. The loon who ran got 42% of the vote.

Obama is setting up offices in the state. I am so happy about this because now the Dems may get shaken out of their comfort zones and have to work. I am talking about the heads of the party. I went to local meetings, and people were so blase about state races I wanted to spit. I will donate to specific candidates, but the state party won't get a dime from me until they act like they want to be a real party and not a clique.

The party can be viable in the state. It will be a harder move than other places, but it can happen. Every county but 2 got more Democratic votes than the election before. They might not have won the county, but the base was growing. I hope Obama will keep that trend moving. We have a perfect chance after the Sanford mess to make a real run.
