2. Meh...Hugo is rubbing me the wrong way...
Okay, so maybe that's a bit of an overstatement. But I disagree with him pretty strongly on the fact that he sees the struggles of oppressed peoples as being a one dimensional battle against anything he perceives as being American imperialism. In the context of the Venezuelan and the broader Latin American perspective, this tunnel vision is something to which I am sympathetic (as Washington has been the primary agent of oppression in that region of the world), but he's so concerned with building an alternative bloc of anyone-who-might-happen-to-be-against-American-imperialism that he fails to tailor his understanding of that particular struggles to the types of oppression that Iranians are facing at the hands of the clerical fascist regime there.

In its role in the overthrow of the Mossadegh government and in propping the Shah and his secret police of brutes who masturbate to the sounds of tortured dissidents, the U.S. is responsible for creating the material conditions that had left to the Iranian Revolution of 1979. What it is not responsible for, as it has not supported the post-revolutionary government, is what the post-revolutionary government has chosen to do with its power for the past 30 years. The blood of Iran's progressives, feminists, students, and socialists is Khomeini's blood, not Washington's. Iran's leftist factions have unanimously adopted this position, and Chavez needs to realize that he was wrong and that the Bolivarian movement is far better off without allies as unsavoury and reactionary as Ahmadinejad.

Yeah, I sound like a pretentious dork, but my girlfriend canceled our plans at the last minute. I really need a fucking coffee. Let's see if the Tim's down the street is still open.
