U.S. taxpayers twice paid for Mark Sanford’s trips to Argentina, though they occurred before he met his mistress there. Another trip to the land of gauchos was funded by South Carolinians and took place after he met his lover, though before he claims to have, er, danced the tango with her.

Though it’s unclear precisely when the trip occurred, it likely would have taken place after he had met the woman. Sanford said Wednesday he met the woman eight years ago, though a romantic relationship did not develop until one year ago.

Sanford also traveled to China and Brazil through the state commerce department, and a review of its records late last year by state press found that taxpayers footed a total bill of $21,488 in Sanford travel. The governors’ office also spent $1,976 in travel for Sanford, according to the review.

1. Stay Tuned...The Best Is Yet To Come....

While chatting (and, yes, laughing) about this scandal yesterday, my friend brought up a very important question. Here's a guy who lied about going hiking and if he hadn't been caught getting off the plane we surely would have heard tales of encounters with bears...why should we even believe this story?

As we've seen more times than not, the initial story, especially when told by one of the principals, never gives the full picture that time does. We haven't heard from others in this matter...and surely now that Sanford's cat is out of the bag, and attention is being focused on his private life, more trash could follow. My friend said he could sense it in Sanford's body language...while caught, he was trying to do damage control at the same time.

I'll bet as we're typing, every record and bill with Sanford's name over the past 8 years is being fine-toothed. If it wasn't state funds that were used, then it could have been federal ones. Or, even more fun, would be if we learn he arranged for his Argentinian Bombshell to have flown here to meet him...then let the fun begin.

3. Of course taxpayers paid for his trips....

The following statement is a lie. The love emails he wrote are dated July 2008. Clearly they were "sparking" OVER a year ago.
