It doesn't matter who dies in the media's disaster capitalist model, in fact the bigger and more famous the better. That's the real outrage, we the people are constantly being treated like lab rats who will react to whatever stimuli is presented.

1. No. It matters because this was one of the most talented people on the planet,
because his body of work is enormous and because the good he did is inestimable.

That's why it matters.

3. In who's mind? The media will tell you
and you'll believe it.

5. Maybe you don't have the use of *your* faculties. That's regrettable.

12. You're correct, the media did "tell" me ...
... this media.

Oh, wait, you meant some other media, didn't you?

Aww.

Welcome to DU anyway!

2. And I'm sure you said the same thing when John Lennon died.
Don't even start. In his heyday, he WAS as big as the Beatles--I didn't know a single kid who didn't want to sing (and dance) like him.

6. OK, because you told me "don't even start" I'll stop thinking
How'd you feel when John Lennon was assassinated? Do you have any thoughts on that other than insults?

8. When John Lennon was assassinated, I woke my whole family up.
Even though we were a working family that couldn't afford to skip one minute of work. My husband moonlighted at a musician or rather, he worked a day job to support his music. We were up all night and felt like we'd been beat up for a week.

This will be another one of those nights. Tonight will be spent with my musician friends and it will be a long one.

There. No insults at all.

10. The media will not make the mistake with Michael Jackson that they made with ...

... Elvis.

I don't remember which magazine it was, but one of the major magazines (it might have been People) didn't mention Elvis' death on the cover (like they do now) and that magazine was pilloried.

It looks like it was People (August 15, 1977, August 22, 1977) and might have been others too.

Ever since then, the medias follow celebrity deaths the way the most ardent fans do.
