Ever notice how Bill Maher reacts to certain women? |
|
So I won't get in any more trouble.....
Has anyone else noticed how Bill Maher reacts to certain women that appear on his show?
This week he fawned over a vapid Cameron Diaz and last week he was condescending to Meghan MeCain. Then, in countless appearances before, he has always been subservient to Ann Coulter (mentioning her should make me safe).
In other words, it seems Maher treats certain women in a certain way......

but I think the key is respect, and I have to wonder how much he has for women. There is a sexist nature of him. He's also condescending, arrogant, and has a huge ego. He's also not always terribly informed of the issue which he's spouting off about and his knowledge of issues sometimes strikes me as superficial at best.
But I find him amusing nevertheless and occasionally he's humorous and has funny observations. I watch his show once in a while because I like the format and he has some interesting guests on.

the OP is 100% correct. Women fall into 2 catagories for Maher; women he wants to fuck and women he respects. If you're old and haggard you are treated like Madeline Albright with respect and like you have something to say. If he thinks that you're hot, then you might as well either shut up or at least amuse him. It's one of the things I hate about him and if I ever meet him I'm going to call him out for it.

|
That's why I think he has Amy Holmes on all the time, and I think he extended more than usual tolerance to Meghan McCain, and there isn't much reason to tolerate Ann Coulter, except with respect to a feeling towards women that exceeds mere chivalry.
Unless we decide he's chivalrous. And not a.....p....pretender of empathetic feelings towards women with the expectation of reciprocal favors.
There. That should be suitably Victorian.

13. I've noticed is that in his panels, he tends to ignore women when they speak. |

His attitude towards women seems to be that they are less than human, and his sexist jokes reflect that, but not as much as his horrible treatment of women on his panel. (I can't comment on his treatment of Diaz in particular, since I no longer watch Maher and refuse to do so.)

39. That's the biggest bullshit I've ever read about Maher. |
|
If anything, he listens *more* to the women on his panel. This, or the previous, season he even had a panel consisting of only women. He even said on his show that women have more character, because it's never women who whine after the show about how they've been treated; it's always the men who do so.
But I know what this is, and what this thread is about. Sometimes, Bill Maher makes jokes about women that are not 'politically correct' and some women... er, I mean, people... can't stand it.

If so, you wouldn't notice Maher doing it. It's common behavior for sexist males. Start to be aware of your own behavior towards women.
Do you get offended at jokes that are not "politically correct" if they make fun of groups other than women, like blacks, Hispanics, homosexuals? If not, why the double standard?

Unless you take "It's common behavior for sexist males" personally.
It is common behavior for (sexist) males who may not notice themselves or others doing it. Haven't you ever been with a group where the men talk to each other as if the women aren't there? It's weird. Not uncommon. Often subconscious.

Last episode I watched he had a woman on who was in charge of oversight of the last TARP bailout. She was middle aged and hardly glamorous, but he was completely engaged in his conversation with her. It was a great segment. Arianna Huffington is one of his closest friends and I doubt that she would put up with "horrible treatment" from anyone.

|
He's a stand-up comic who's been given his own hour of airtime.
Thinking of BM as any kind of spokesperson for Dems serves only make Dems look silly and petty.
Last week DU'ers were putting him into their Slap/Chops for saying something they disagreed with. He used his air time to call Obama out on his use of the M$M and for that he was, for about fifteen seconds, Persona Non Grata.
Same with KO, and a host of other "supposed" progressive spokespersons. They're heroes if they speak what we percieve as the truth, and zeroes if they disagree. Heroes today, Zeroes tomorrow.
Sports fans would call most DU'ers "Fair Weather Fans".

especially the part where Maher tried to smooth her ruffled feathers after his other guests verbally beat the snot out of her. He talked to her like she was a child who had been humiliated by her friends (which she sort of verified by sitting there pouting).
Diaz - glad I didn't watch.
In all honesty, I don't really like Maher all that much because he is entirely too timid with his wing nut guests, But it is enjoyable to turn on the TV and hear someone talking about bush, cheney, limpballs, mccain, boner, palin and the other pukes in the same kind of language we use in real life (complete with f-words).

I see that perception with a lot of men, especially older men like Bill and the generation before him. oddly enough, I dont see it so much amongst my sons generation. they seem to be more open minded, which I like. and dont forget, women bought into that too. my mom , who is 82, still sees things that way. I find it amusing. Bill Maher sort of reminds me of the little brother who is snarky and makes jokes. My take on him is he is insecure around women, and going thru some mid life crisis or something. peter pan syndrome . I still agree with his analysis of the Dems however.

How he obviously gets thrown off his game by come women and how he clearly allows this to happen. I keep using McCain as the example. As others have pointed out, she was clearly out of her league on his show and it was embarrassing to watch. Just like the last show with Diaz.
He also does this somewhat with Huffington, but she's too tough for him and gives it right back.

That hasn't changed over the years. When I heard he was touching Meghan McLame, I just rolled my eyes.
I swear he has a thing for blond Republican dull blades - like an "angry f___" fantasy or something.

He may not hate having sex with women, but he hates everything else about women.

It's fair to bash him for specific things he does or says but to say he hates women? How do you "notice" that? I'm crying foul on your post. Waaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!

He's a total dick, and very very childish in the way he thinks about women and the way he acts around them. He's incapable of a relationship with anything but an orifice.

But even a man should be able to see how disdainful Maher is toward women. Well, unless that man shared his sentiments.

have a very good understanding of women. I've been watching him since the "Politically Incorrect" days and he has said on many occasions that women hate each other. He brought this up with Diaz, which she refuted. Thank You, Cameron. I'm not sure why there are men who can't resist propagating this myth that women hate each other. We don't. Sure, there are some women who don't get along well with other women. But they are a sad minority.

|

He isn't afraid to call the Dems out when they are behaving like asswipes. Haven't watched the show in ages though and I didn't see any of the appearances you list, but I can understand why many people would be condescending to Meghan McCain. She is a vapid moron with a mike....the only reason she has a mike is because she is McCain's daughter and appears to be trying to become the "kinder"/"gentler" face of the Repug party.
I do agree though that he does seem to like (barf) Ann Coulter, which is the one thing about him that I have always found absolutely inexplicable.

74. One time he had Princeton Professor Melissa Harris-Lacewell on his panel |
|
She teaches race and gender studies and is really sharp, as well as photogenic - Olbermann has her on fairly often. Anyway, Maher was acting like a total sexist assclown and she was visibly disgusted by him. I don't think she'll be going back on his show and yeah, I do notice that he treats women like shit in general.
Maher and Howard Stern are two "liberals" I have no use for.

I love this woman.
And what is so great about her is she can be so engaging when needed to be. I've seen her on the KO show when she is so charming, funny and charismatic. And then other times when it is desired, she can be so scholarly and serious.
Like Olbermann, she is another one of our unsung national treasures.

Morning Melissa would be a vast improvement over Morning Joe. She's so much smarter than Joe and is not a 50's style sitcom wife like Mika. Kick Joe out. Put Melissa in.

|
Meghan McCain, for instance, seems so young and vulnerable. Attacking her would be like beating up a kitten. If a woman has teeth and can fight back, I think he's a little rougher.
As for Coulter, I'm not sure what to make of their relationship. They used to date, but he has nothing good to say about her now. I think he just looks at her as if she's loony.

97. Bill Maher is an interesting character. |
|
He is a smart, funny guy. But he definitely has issues with women. He isn't a great looking guy, and he is very insecure where they are concerned. It is obvious that when he was younger, he had major issues with women and was probably routinely rejected by them. Now that he has money, and fame, it's gotta be a lot easier for him, and maybe he is trying to convince the people around him that he deserves these women, that he is man enough. He sees women as trophies now as well, something to show off.
Honestly, I don't think he HATES women. But he is certainly sexist. And when he has the good looking ones on his show, he sometimes reverts to the kind of personality you would see in your high school nerd who got a cheerleader on his show....sometimes flattery and flirty if they are nice, and dickish and insecure if they aren't.
My two cents.
