2. Well,
right now, this great bootleg of a Springsteen concert is playing in our house, blaring actually, for the first time, and it's about a thousand times better than I expected it to be, so I'm really happy about that.

We did lunch out on the grill - hot dogs and hamburgers, and they were excellent.

I've got a stack of books I've been waiting to read, so I'm going to break one open in a few minutes.

Plus, I found the old recipe for braised shitake mushrooms, and they're soaking now, and soon I'll fix that, and they are delicious, and that pretty much makes the rest of the day - already quite lovely - just about perfect..............................

24. I'm on the other side of Atlanta from you..
Been walking the dogs at five thirty am and riding my bike at about five fifty am, it's been reasonably cool that early. After thirty minutes on the bike though, I'm totally soaked even with the wind from my movement.

About eight or nine years ago it was worse though, we had almost an entire month when it went over one hundred every single day, my lawn crunched when I walked on it.

Today is my oldest granddaughter's ninth birthday, I've got a digital camera for her, the party is in about another hour..

It rained yesterday and I thought that after the rain it was safe to walk my dogs. What a mistake! It was like walking in a sauna. I have already told the dogs that there is no way we are going for a walk today. My outdoor therometer has been stuck on 100 degrees. I think it is registering the humidity.

33. california native here
53 years....and when i lived in SoCal (before 1984), it was a very rare occasion for it to get to 100 in the summertime. when i moved to NorCal, it was very often above 100 (that dry heat). i'm inside my ac'd house and don't foresee stepping a foot outside today. this is my usual pattern here in the summertime. i don't do extreme heat well at all.

28. It's 104 here in the mother lode
The dogs went in the barn and I jury rigged a swamp cooler for them. Hung a couple of burlap sacks in the doorway on one end then put a big ass fan in the door on the other end to suck air through the wet bags. Cools the place down by 20 degrees. Every couple hours I go out and hose the bags down again.

31. Great idea for larger spaces...
I took a floor fan, hung some small tubing with pin holes around the outside, hooked it to the spigot, and pointed the whole contraption into the chicken coop. I'm getting about 10 degree difference from outside to inside the coop.

Of course, if the humidity goes up much more that solution is not going to be as effective.

Peace,
MZr7

9. The sun is warm, my flowers are blooming ....
... and in the week following my 66th birthday I'm still viewing the sod from the green side. After resuscitating my 89-year-old mother (a 'Heimlich' would break bones) at a restaurant last week, who stopped breathing for 2-3 minutes and was unconscious for about 10-15 minutes, I'm not inclined to be too excitable about narcissistic assholes on DU.

Besides ... Catwoman and I still get along, so life's gooood. :loveya:

22. Thanks.
It's been a battle for 6 years as a caregiver ... and that was one of life's more 'intense' moments. I'm not sure we'll be welcome back at the sushi bar very soon. Police, paramedics, and an unconscious woman being resuscitated by her son doesn't whet the customers' appetites for raw fish or Miso soup. She refused to go to the hospital and passed the mental acuity and stroke field tests, so we just cleaned up, paid the bill, and went home. She hasn't shown any notable after-affects, so I guess I applied thoracic pressure soon enough. Life in the big city.

36. My mother never told me there'd be days like that.
:silly:

I had doctor's appointment and my (our) doctor (and his nurse) gave me an "atta boy" after I described the event and answered several questions ... but it sure didn't feel 'heroic.' I'm just not cut out to be a paramedic. No way. (When I was finishing Army basic training in 1968 and got orders to report to Ft. Sam Houston, my greatest fear was that I was going to be assigned to be an Army Medic. Ft. Sam is where they were trained. Boy, was I worried! I just don't have what it takes ... those guys have ALWAYS been awesome to me.)

I've been known to nearly faint when getting injections or giving blood. That stuff really stresses me.

Sitting across the table, eating some great sushi, and watching her lips turn blue, seeing her have what looked like a seizure and then slump in her chair unconscious and not breathing ... was like witnessing a death. It happened quite quickly -- without much fanfare. The myriad of thoughts, fears, and options flooded my brain ... and I just did whatever came to the top of my gray matter. Bizarrely enough, it seemed to work. I'm just glad I don't have any "chicken with head cut off" or "run around with hair on fire" inclinations ... long ago, I learned I was one of those strange Nuts that just focuses and goes into thinking overdrive. It's not "calm" exactly ... just not crazed. It's a 'wired' response that served me well in Viet Nam and in my career (even though the folks acting out the 'Drama' often resent me for not joining in).

Hard to explain. Then again, I'm usually not inclined to talk about such things. I just don't have the vocabulary tools to do it.

19. Definitely the best part of summer
Fresh fruits and veggies. Yum, yum. It might be hot as blazes outside, put we're putting on a spread at our house:

Fried Okra, squash, green beans, sliced tomatoes and cucumbers, cornbread and sweet tea. And for dessert, we've got a watermelon on ice in a cooler. Come on over and eat with us. There's plenty.

25. Trivial as it may sound...
My 4 backyard chickens (2 hens and 2 chicks) have managed to survive 7 days of this oppressive 100+ degree Austin heat. Sadly, many others in the area have suffered losses to their flocks due to the heat.

Like I said its pretty trivial, but with everything thing drying up and dying its "good news to me" my girls are hanging in there.

(now if they would just get back to laying... I'm almost out of eggs... :) )

Peace,
MZr7

30. Yeah, right here in the burbs....
Great eggs!!! and great fertilizer/bug control for the vegetable gardens. Not to mention they are great entertainment. I highly recommend it.

I had a similar experience with my grandmother as well at her small farm. I too have never forgotten and vowed not to repeat.

Just checked on the girls again (its an hourly vigil from noon until sundown). Outside its 101, inside the coop its just above 90 thanks to a misting fan system I installed several days ago. :)

Peace,
MZr7
