Michael Steele "personally excited" that Palin is "freed up" to help "reorient" GOP and "grow it"

Steele only had kind words for Sarah Palin, who shockingly revealed on Friday that she was stepping down as Alaska’s governor.

He overlooked the fact that she didn’t serve one full term as governor, praised her for resigning because her presence had become a “distraction,” and said he was “personally excited” she was now “freed up now to engage across the country, to help reorient the party and grow it.”

Politico’s Ben Smith noted that Steele told Fox, “Not having talked to the governor, I take 2012 off the table right now simply because given everything she’s going through personally, dealing with the financial mess that all these ludicrous investigations have put her and Todd in, at the moment, I think she’s trying to focus on getting her house in order, her personal house in order.”

However, a spokesperson for the RNC chair shot back in an email, “Steele was saying this morning that TALKING about 2012 is off the table – because she has make it clear that resigning was a personal decision and has little to do with future aspirations. Palin has said that everything is on the table. Steele takes no issue with that.”
