MSNBC's Olbermann Twice Gets Free Republic Founder's Name Wrong By Matthew Balan Created 2009-07-15 12:11

Keith Olbermann, one of MSNBC’s resident leftists posing as anchors, named Jim Robinson, the founder of FreeRepublic.com, as his runner-up on his “Worst Person in the World” feature on his Countdown program on Monday evening but twice called him “Jim Thompson.”

After first implying that “Thompson” and his site’s moderators were a bunch of juveniles, Olbermann explained that the reason why the Free Republic founder was so bad was because a few posters on one of the regular picture caption threads made “racist” comments, that it took them “as long as three days before removing a comment thread devoted to the racist rage of a disturbingly large number of his posters, possibly some of the same people who had previously conducted polls on the site on how best to topple the freely-elected government of the United States.”

The MSNBC personality gave some examples from the caption thread, which involved the widely-circulated pictured of First Daughter Malia Obama wearing a t-shirt with a peace sign on it, and then poked fun of all of the posters on Free Republic, labeling them, “clowns.”

...and the delicious tears of the angry little freeps who feel "slighted" by that big bad MEANIE KO:

He should see what FReepers call him. “OlberFuhrer” is my pet name for the blowhard. Of course I don’t have much use for BOR either so I must be an equal opportunity basher.

Actually, MSNBC may be deliberately using the wrong name to avoid a defamation lawsuit.

If Jim were to sue, they could claim they did not defame “jim robinson” but defamed “jim thompson” and thus are not guilty.

3. It's an in-joke...
...Olbermann knew exactly what he was doing...it was deliberate, and there was nothing sloppy about it. Google "Free Republic Jim Thompson" if you don't believe me...

5. It is because the Vancouver print reporter published his initial
account referring to the proverbial head of Freeperdom as "Jim Thompson"...

He has since corrected it, but KO and some others failed to realize the error.

11. They have these people called "fact checkers."
Their function is to consult multiple sources to ensure that information presented is as accurate as possible. Evidently nobody bothered in this case. Sloppy.

15. so...?
I'm only explaining why this was not an intentional intent to get the goad of Freepers.

Your adamant repetition of his "sloppiness" suggests you may have issues with KO?

21. I don't have issues with KO.
It wasn't even KO's error, it was whoever prepares his scripts. It's pretty obvious it wasn't done intentionally to goad the freepers. I didn't say it was, so your protest to that effect is pretty fucking pointless. What I DO have issues with is sloppy reporting. I work in media, and I've had some sloppy colleagues. Easily checked fuckups like that cast a shadow of doubt on anything a news-gathering/-reporting entity does. Plus, you may have noticed that when repubs do it, it slides and when libs do it it's OMG ITS TEH LIBRULZ MEDIA ARMAGGEDDONZZ!! We need to be better than them, ALWAYS.

And BTW, who cares if I *did* have issues with KO? Of course, you'd NEVER insinuate that I was a freeper, oh, perish the thought. :eyes:

to be repeated endlessly like "hugh" and "series." Happy are the simpleminded for they are easily amused.

6. I realize that it's futile asking Freepers to read a newspaper (except maybe the Moonie times)
But they ARE aware that it was the Vancouver Sun who referred to RimJob as "Thompson" and Keith/his producers were just going by that article?

Sloppy research all around, maybe. Deliberately trying to "disrespect" the Trailer Park Commando? Not a chance.

That's why we make fun of your crappy site, your shitty founder, and your parentage and personal hygiene.

If you weren't hopeless fuckwits, you wouldn't attract such scorn.

My recommendation? Stop being fuckwits. If you are unable to comply, well then, tough shit.

. . . this is just me trying to "relate" to FReeptards. Maybe I pitched it too high. If so, how's this for an alternative:

14. Many freepers have complained for some time about misspellings...
in coverage of the site in mainstream media, and about the "Jim Thompson" error specifically. A couple days before the Shuster segment aired, Jim Rob specifically expressed his hope that MSNBC would get his name right. So I think that clearly provided Olbermann with a strong motive to get his goat by boogering his name.
