I had the nicest interview with a 70-something year old man |
|
I run a company that works with newspapers across the nation. I needed to hire a collector to go out and pick up checks from area businesses. So, I ran an ad for the job, and a gentleman called me on the phone about it, so I asked him to come in for an interview. He brought his wife. It was the cutest thing I've ever seen.
Here they were, two retirees, both in their seventies (I didn't ask, but I could tell), coming in for an interview. I hired him on the spot.
He immediately went out and bought himself a GPS. So I figured I might as well give him a small raise.
I've never had a better collector in all of my years of running this company. And this man is soooo proud to have a job. I've given him another raise since the first one. Now he makes almost double what he started out with, and of course, I don't make as much money, because it cuts into my profit, but he is worth every dime.

have alot of fun running around together, too! You are such a good employer, and you are getting something from your delinquent accounts at the same time!
BTW, you are "just up the road" from me. I'm further SW, about 140mi away on hwy59.

I didn't tell him, by the way, when I gave him his raises. I completely forgot about them and they just appeared on his check. He came to me wondering what it was all about, and I told him, "Oh, I gave you a raise." He was ecstatic. The next time I increased his pay, he came to me again, and said he needed to speak with me privately, and told me I had made a mistake on his check. I told him, no, that's your rate of pay from now on; you got another raise.
Now, it's kind of cute. He never leaves my office without shaking my hand and thanking me over and over again. I just tell him, "Hey, you deserve it. You're worth it. You do a really good job for me." I've never seen anyone so happy about raises.
And, yes, our little company is very good to it's people. We pay well to those who work well. It is wonderful to be able to do this for people. One of my joys in life is to get a new hire in and see how nervous and worried they are about how they will be treated at this new job, and see their worries fall away, one by one, by the end of the day.
There are always those who will try to take advantage and get something for nothing. We don't keep those people very long. But the ones that we keep, they love their jobs.
We make sure of it.

But, don't be surprised if you're suddenly inundated with resumes from DU'ers 'of a certain age!'

He gets a job with someone who appreciates his experience and you get someone who has experience.
