MSNBC: Gonzales has "made a lot of calls" to Republicans telling them his side of the story

http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2007/04/09/116362.aspx

From NBC's Kelly O'Donnell
Senior White House officials say Attorney General Alberto Gonzales has "made a lot of calls" to members of Congress in advance of his much anticipated appearance on Capitol Hill next week. Officials say those calls have been to Republicans, and that Gonzales is "trying to tell them the narrative. Here's what happened, what went wrong, and what I'm doing about it."

Officials add that President Bush has spoken to Gonzales a "few times," and that he remains supportive. Privately, officials acknowledge that perceptions about how well the attorney general does before Congress will be make or break.

10. Hmmm, under charges of partisan politics corrupting the justice
department, Gonzo tries to save his skin in an absurdly partisan manner. Boy, that'll look good at the hearings. Heckuva job, Gonzo!

4. Well, I am betting he gave each of the Repub Members a Different Story....
.... if he ever goes near the hearing at which he is to testify under oath, it will be the biggest mistake Bush could make. It will be a disaster, because he cannot reconcile the different stories he already told under oath.

Gonzales is toast, any way you look at him. Somebody will tell Bush it is hopeless before he ever testifies.

6. I'd like to know who he's talking to
Who is taking Mr. Gonzales' calls, offering him a sympathetic ear, and what are they telling him? Are they telegraphing what questions he can expect from the Democrats? Is he being coached and informed what the committee chairman might already know? Remember that Karl Rove had to be called back before the Fitzgerald grand jury something like five times? And the only reason Rove finally gave a few substantive answers is because someone tipped him off before his last appearance that Fitzgerald had the goods on him, and the "I don't recall" dodge wasn't going to work this time.

Have I mentioned recently how much I loathe this gang of criminals?

8. Gee...sure wish I could call people before a hearing! I guess it really
is who you know...:eyes:

Unbelieveable that this guy is putting his case out in front of the GOP types, I'm not surprised,
I just figure this is part of the way he is used to doing business; Line 'em up before you have to go throught he hearing and hope you can sway a few D's while figuring you have the R's in your pocket.

This guy is as sleazy as one can get. This looks to me like a form of "jury tampering". Wish he'd try this on me when I was in the jury box...:grr:

12. Call me cynical, but here's what I see happening
Given that Gonzo has managed to hang on so far, he's making the calls now to twist arms for support. After the hearings, the Dems will complain that he didn't tell the truth and/or his explanations are bogus (which will be true); the Repukes will get on message with the WH and praise his candor and acceptance of responsibility, and Gonzo will keep his job. The whole thing will go away quietly.

This has the consolation prize for the Dems, however, in that Gonzo will be a daily reminder to the public of what screw-ups the Bushies are.

14. Yes. That is the GOP game plan IMHO.
It may work. What pisses me off is that Dems are just so scattered on this. Every Dem not on the committee seems to be ignoring it.

There are twenty some temporary USA's out there who have never been confirmed by Congress. These USA's sole goal is to get GOPers elected.

Not one non-committee Dem even seems like they are paying attention. You'd think they would since it is their jobs which are on the line here.

17. I thought Gonzo was gone-zo weeks ago.
But here he still is. That's why I think he'll survive this -- and because * is the most stubborn, muleheaded sonofabitch on the planet, to the point of idiocy.
