About bleeping the 'naughty' words on TV.
Why does the Independent Film Channel (IFC) not do it, and the Comedy channel does?

1. Kids watch Comedy Central, I suppose
Most kids aren't into Independent Films.

You always can tell exactly what has been bleeped - why bother?

4. IFC is not available from my provider so here is a question
Does IFC have commercial interruptions?

Sponsorship may have something to do with it.

8. IFC does not have commercials. I believe it is one of the few
truly independent channels.

10. 'Fargo' is even funnier. Lots of creative use of the "frozen".
and I've never seen 'The Big Lebowski' on commercial tee vee. I giggle just thinking about the substitutions for that one.

12. My favorite "fuck" substitution is "freak"
The dubbed "40 Year Old Virgin" is a classic "freak" fest.

like on BSG. They invented that one to get past the censors, and it actually worked.

7. My only guess is that Comedy Central like most cable channels is owned
by one of the big 5 - in this case CBS (Viacom). So in order to avoid any crap from the FCC they serve PAP.
Interesting to go through the hundred or so real channels you get to see how many are really independent. Very few.
So the promise of a huge variety of programming that cable offered became just more places for the giants to run hours and hours of insane advertising.

11. I was very disappointed at how Blazing Saddles played on TV recently
Every instance of the "N" word was bleeped. It ruined about 1/4 of the jokes.

13. Blazing Saddles used to play on network TV in the 70s, and the *n* word was NOT bleeped
-though it probably should have been.

14. That word is so deeply embedded in the script, the movie doesn't work without it
Edited on Wed Jul-22-09 10:08 AM by slackmaster
Rather than bleep out such a large amount of dialogue, I'd rather see the whole film simply not run other than late at night or on pay-per-view TV.

But it's not a racist film. It parodies racism.

17. "Chappelle's Show" did a sketch once, on Comedy Central.
"N-I-G, G-A-R, it's the Niggar Family!"

Some of the lines:

"Look hon, my sister just had a baby. Look at that little bundle of joy!"
"She's got those Niggar lips!"

"Is Tim still asleep?" "I think so." "He sure is one lazy Niggar."

"Jenny has a date tonight with that Niggar boy from school." "Oh, NO!" "No, that's his name: Timmy Niggar."

Not a single bleep, but then, the entire sketch, from beginning to end, depended wholly on the word. It's really one of the funniest sketches his show ever did.

21. All about the commercials
And an FCC that is living in some past era. An FCC that was politicized to the final degree by Bushco, and used to raise money and harass good people. They allow those 'erectile dysfunction' ads to run non stop, with full porno music and arch comments. But they can not endure the word fuck. So ironic.

22. Basic Vs. Premium Cable
The industry "self-regulates"...as it's content is not regulated by the FCC. The old dividing line was keeping the language clean on their basic package and allowing the language to flow on premium channels as they were purchased separately (and supposedly the person subscribing was aware of the "Soft R" nature of the services)

...and that most of the audience is 18-34 year olds, they still show TV versions of movies. But interestingly most of the violence has not been removed because there is no FCC regulations against violence.

The US seems to be the only Western country in the world that has this Puritanical hypocrisy.
