BBC: Sudanese woman 'faces 40 lashes' (for wearing trousers)

A Sudanese woman who is due to appear in court in Khartoum says she faces up to 40 lashes for wearing trousers.

The woman, Lubna Hussein - a former journalist who now works for the United Nations - has invited journalists and observers to the trial.

She was arrested in a restaurant in the capital with other women earlier this month for wearing "indecent" clothing.

She said 10 of the women arrested, including non-Muslims, later each received 10 lashes and a fine of $100.

1. I wonder what they would do to a cross-dressing man...

Anyway, that is so ridiculous.

6. Ridiculous is right. And I believe, as a straight, pants-wearing-woman, it would incalculably worse
for a cross-dressing man (or woman).

2. I read a book by deSade called "The 100 Days of Sodom."
The story is about four men who buy some teenagers, hire eight prostitutes and some cooks, and take them to a secluded chateau for 120 days.

The teenagers have strict rules to live by and the punishments are even stricter. The four men become frustrated because so few teenagers break the rules. They make the rules harder to live by so more teenagers will break them and therefor more punishments can be implemented.

4. I would agree with this even though I was actually thinking about the pants.
I don't subscribe to deSade's philosophy, but reading it has helped me to understand some of the things around me.

5. It was in my 30s before I read deSade.

It wasn't the sort of thing one could easily find on small-town library shelves where I grew up and even if deSade had been available in the library, I would have turned up on every prayer list in a three-state area if I'd checked his books out.

7. I read Marquis De Sade in college (San Francisco State University)
I can't remember what the class was called, something like Images of Eroticism. We also read Sacher-Masoch's "Venus in Furs", and some other sexually charged literature, and films like "Caligula".
