Robot attacked Swedish factory worker
A Swedish company has been fined 25,000 kronor ($3,000) after a malfunctioning robot attacked and almost killed one of its workers at a factory north of Stockholm.

The incident took place in June 2007 at a factory in Bålsta, north of Stockholm, when the industrial worker was trying to carry out maintenance on a defective machine generally used to lift heavy rocks. Thinking he had cut off the power supply, the man approached the robot with no sense of trepidation.

But the robot suddenly came to life and grabbed a tight hold of the victim's head. The man succeeded in defending himself but not before suffering serious injuries.

"The man was very lucky. He broke four ribs and came close to losing his life," said Leif Johansson.

I had to post this just for the headline!

11. Or forget to turn things off before attempting maintenance...
by this headline's logic... people are 'attacked' by electrical circuits all the time.

14. attacked??
OMG - what idiot used that term?

That's like saying a car or a chainsaw "attacked" someone.

It was a malfunctioning piece of MACHINERY that the ijut didn't insure was lockout/tagout before trying to service.

Using the word "attack" just stirs up the Luddites.

16. Yes, it's just a simple machine
with no ill intentions.

That's exactly what it wants you to think. This is part of an ongoing conspiracy by robots against their human overlords. Robot attacks were virtually nonexistent a century ago, since then they've skyrocketed, starting around the 80s and steadily increasing.

32. The "Terminator" is governor of California! "Drones" are killing scores of civilians in
Afghanistan every week! We let our cars control our thought patterns*. And now a machine, that a human says he turned off, attacks and tries to kill him! Look out, people! You thought "Battlestar Galactica" was fiction? Ha!

----------------------------------

*(I once knew a very nice elderly lady, a former librarian, as a nodding acquaintance on the street where I lived. I had talked to her a couple of times, and liked her. She got dressed up once a week, complete with hat and white gloves, and took an outing in her car to the supermarket. One day, I was driving past the supermarket in a big hurry to get somewhere, and cursing the car in front of me for driving too slow, wobbling a bit over the line so that I couldn't pass, and then stopping for a left turn into supermarket parking lot. I was furious at this car. As I drove by, gunning my engine in anger, I saw who was driving--my elderly neighbor. Her white gloved hands gripped the steering wheel. Her pretty little hat bobbed beneath it, cuz she was short and could barely see over the steering wheel. And suddenly my emotional landscape entirely changed. This could have been my own mother or grandmother! As I drove on, I wished her well on her little excursion. And I thought: how would I have reacted--if I had known that I was trapped in my car behind another car that was being driven by this elderly lady, or my own kin? I would have abandoned my own speed goal for a moment of patience and empathy. I would have wished her well from the beginning, and not thought ill of her slow or wobbly driving. I would have been glad that she was having an outing, with her white gloves and her hat--and that she was still able to drive and do things for herself. If I had not had a metal prison around me--my car--made for speed, and infusing my consciousness with that relentless impulse for speed at the cost of anger and rudeness--I would have reacted quite differently. I would have reacted like a human being.

The obstacle ahead of you on the road is not a car. It is a human being. And if you see it that way, it ceases to be an obstacle. It becomes flesh and blood. Someone like you just trying to get from here to there in a mode of transportation that destroys human feeling. We start "thinking like a car." I won't anthropomorphize it further and say that the car invades and takes over our consciousness, but that's sure what it feels like when I objectify another driver as if he or she is a car. I will only say that I think we should become aware of this trick of our own consciousness, and not let it take us over.
