Poll question: What Social/Economic Class Are You A Member Of ?
Who are the "scum of the earth"?

According to the Christian bible:

“To this very hour we go hungry and thirsty, we are in rags, we are brutally treated, we are homeless. We work hard with our own hands. When we are cursed, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure it; when we are slandered, we answer kindly. Up to this moment we have become the scum of the earth, the refuse of the world.” (1 Corinthians 4:11-13)

And if you happen to be religious you might want to joint the Scum of the Earth church!

1. Working class who inherited middle class
and doesn't have a clue what to do with it.

I just forgot how to be a spender.

5. Like every other person here,
I am middle-class down to my marrow, even if I don't self-identify as such, so it colors my perception of the world in ways of which I cannot always totally be aware.

12. In the developed world? Not a whole lot of much
Apparently all you have to do to be of the working class is not own a factory. If you do happen to own a factory, but wish to become working class, I recommend selling off your factory. Your fellow workers will begin to see you in a whole new light.

And I'm a Unitarian, so I think I'm already in the SOTE Church.

10. Only in NYC: Over-educated. Underpaid (drastically) bohemian. Gave up moolah to "do art" and "good"
Edited on Tue Aug-04-09 02:39 PM by HamdenRice
I notice that it's not on your list. But my circle of friends tends to be over educated, underpaid, bohemians who got a lot of schooling, did a little private sector to pay off student loans and now toil as under-paid creatives.

There's like a zillion of us here.

15. Working class here.

But 90% of working class people I know prefer to think of themselves as middle class. That's now beginning to change as they lose their jobs and "nest eggs".

18. You're struggling to become part of the small business middle class!

I take it you're not a millionnaire capitalist but I could be wrong.

22. I live at half the median wage in an area rated slightly higher than median cost of living
but my little house is paid for and I have no debt of any kind. So though we grocery shop with the calculator and have to go over our choices to pick out which generic staple we'll have to live without this week if we get over the budget - I still FEEL middle class because I own a computer of my own, a half decent car, and the ability to buy enough gas to drive to Michigan and see my Mom a few times a year.

25. I've noticed that our "standards" for being considered middle class seem to be dropping.

As the economy grows worse the standards will drop even lower because everyone prefers to think of themselves being middle class rather than working class or lower class.

27. I think of working class as union people
though I support unions fully, I have always worked behind a desk for very small businesses. So I think I would either be lower or middle class.

To me, lower class is when you are long term government assistance because work does not provide enough to keep roof, food and clothing for yourself or your family.
