****One More Time***** Unrecommend means it is a vote against the thread going to the Greatest Page |
|
It doesn't necessarily mean that a post doesn't have merit. It doesn't necessarily mean that a person disagrees with your post.
There are PLENTY of posts that have merit and that are awesome and that people agree with but that doesn't mean that it needs to be on the greatest page.
It doesn't mean that the post will vanish. It doesn't mean that people don't like you. It doesn't mean that your efforts will go unnoticed.
Can we get that straight? I don't know why people think that it means more then it does. It just means that someone doesn't think it belongs on the greatest page. Not that they don't agree with you, or that they want to kill health care reform, or that they are a birther...just means hey only so much room on greatest...so not this one.

Last night I posted about how Clinton was on his way to North Korea to help free the two journalists and it was unrec'd immediately. Immediately.
Let me say it one more time - The troll who unrec'd that thread can kiss my fat ass. :D

18. This is an example of what I posted about this morning |
|
On a perfectly good post, not a contentious point, and unrec'd within seconds of being posted, with no explanation. In my little mind, if I don't believe a post should be on the greatest page, I simply don't give it a rec. I rarely have unrec'd anything, except those I thought obvious trolls. Later, I would check back, and most of them were TS'ed.

But I do find it galling when an important story gets the unrec immediately.
In the six years I've been here I can't remember another feature getting the negative response that unrec has gotten. I know it has its many fans. But I just can't recall a new feature causing contention like this.

While I'd agree with you that this story is important (and if you link it, I'd be happy to recommend it), that doesn't make it important to everyone. You do not get to decide that, which is the entire point of rec/unrec.
If more people think it's important than not, it'll be on the greatest. Otherwise, it won't. It's pretty simple.

56. as I said in this thread, I don't care about making it to the greatest |
|
I found it galling that someone unrec'd it almost immediately upon it being posted to DU last night. that's it pure and simple.
Now, about this story in particular - get real already. Don't lecture me about how some might not think it's an important event and story. You know better. And the unrec feature used in this instance smells of pure troll bullshit. The greatest page isn't the issue at all. I'm convinced that it was right wing trolls trying to bury the good news of the impending release of the journalists. And I hate that crap.
Please take the last word. I'm done with what you're pushing here.

60. It might be bullshit, but other real DUers can still pump it up. |
|
It's not like unrec'ing prevents that from happening. And beyond not being on the greatest page, the feature has no ability to "bury" anything, so I don't see your point if you're truly claiming you don't care about the greatest page. It doesn't sink a thread, it doesn't hide a thread - it does nothing except make it qualify or not qualify for greatest. That's it.
Get all self-righteous if you want, but you're either not understanding the feature or you're just proselytizing. Either way, you've got the wrong idea.

20. As a matter of transparency the votes toward both should be reflected, |
|
to give the most accurate view of D.U.'s perspective on any issue, subject or candidate, there is a large difference in intensity and feeling between 200 rec/pro 205 unrec/anti vs 5 rec/pro and 10 unrec/anti.
Furthermore if a thread has a <0 and you rec it, there very likely will be no visual affirmation of your vote and for a group of people that fought so hard for electoral reform where every vote counts, paper trails and such, I find this especially ironic and somewhat tragic.

26. Yes. And that the feature clearly doesn't illustrate DU's perspective on any issue.... |
|
...and that the site's owners obviously want it that way and implemented the option as such....
What are we to infer from that?
Thus far it's been a divisive feature that's yet to have a credible explanation - especially re how the unrec votes are not displayed as well. Something very suspect in that decision.

At least for me, I am unreccing something because I think it does not have merit, and because I strongly disagree with the post. It could mean that I don't like the person making the post, but why wouldn't my opinion change if a person that I don't like makes an excellent post it would be ridiculous to unrec it out of spite. There are not too many here that I dislike anyway. If there are, they are probably on ignore, but I don't really dislike the people I ignore, I just don't want to read their insults or be tempted into the proven foolish task of trying to reason with them or have a civil discussion. I don't know them or care about them enough to actually dislike them.

There is a title, which may not tell you anything. There's also the front page. When I first come to DU, my link takes me to the front page. There are threads with the greatest number of R's. I read many of them and usually (not always) find them to be excellent. Then with others a title may not tell me much and the author is not that familiar, but it does have ten recs, so I am more likely to click on that thread to see what people thought was so great. A higher number of recs simply does make a post stand out in a crowd.
To an extent they also say "I am DU and I approve this message". Which is why I like the unrec. It allows me to go beyond posting reply #48 which is likely to not be read, but also to vote 'this is crap'.
The complaint, is, logically, that it also gives the same power to rightwing trolls. They will vote something down as 'crap' if it bashes Republicans or defends Obama or liberal values.
Of course, in the minds of some, I have just said the same thing twice.

74. Are you SERIOUSLY trying to say that people don't look at the recommendation column? |
|
Big damned deal that it doesn't program the thread to oblivion, people look at the recommend, total viewings and total posts columns to determine what they want to spend their time with.
Far too many like to tell others what's worth dealing with, and that ABSOLUTELY affects the thread's future.
It also brings out the nasty side of people who feel they're fighting the good fight by quashing any dissent.
Important threads pointing out missteps or other actions by the administration are labled treason by the local Deacons of Decency, and thoughtful discussion is crushed before given a chance to develop.
Some people are more given to following the crowd than others, and this has MUCH more effect than simply elevation to the wing-ding doozey page.

Seriously.
Although a few times I'll look for the <0 just to see what it's all about and found some great thread that way.
This is the real world and we have just as much right to agree or disagree with a post. Unrec feature does the job it is suppose to do and yet....and yet....
I searched GD for the top 10 most replied-to threads and TWO of them have <0 threads and THREE of the 10 most replied to threads have <0 unrec in GDP.
and if I expanded that search range to 10 or less recommends - both forums have at least 5 that qualify for 10 or less unrec and well over 100 replies each.
So thing is, most of us don't care. I guess it's life or death for you - whatever.

77. I don't look at the recommend column. |
|
I look at the OP and the first few replies to see if this is something I'd be happy to see on the front page, or if it's just an airing of DU's dirty laundry, and then I unrec or do not unrec accordingly.

76. "....being on the Greatest Page has nothing to do with merit" |
|
Edited on Wed Aug-05-09 12:35 AM by omega minimo
The whole UnRec toy has been presented as a moving target of What Has Merit Emough To Be On Greatest and We Who Know These Things and Know What Everyone Like Us In The Majoirty Thinks, Will Know It When We See It.
Including in this OP.
Which, considering how quickly DU moves, the notion of "just means hey only so much room on greatest...so not this one.," rings incredibly hoolow.
Why are the UnRec people the ones continuing to run OPs on UnRec?

78. You have to admit that it's been fun to watch. |

I always have to wonder how trouble free someone's life must be to actually worry about this. My cat having furballs ranks higher on my priority list of things to worry myself over. Especially as he tends to hack them up inside. x(
