Public plan would allow abortion coverage
Federal funds are now restricted to specific cases involving rape, incest

Health care legislation before the U.S. Congress would allow a new government-sponsored insurance plan to cover abortions, a decision that would affect millions of women and recast federal policy on the divisive issue.

Federal funds for abortions are now restricted to cases involving rape, incest or danger to the health of the mother. Abortion opponents say those restrictions should carry over to any health insurance sold through a new marketplace envisioned under the legislation, an exchange where people would choose private coverage or the public plan.

Abortion rights supporters say that would have the effect of denying coverage for abortion to millions of women who now have it through workplace insurance and are expected to join the exchange.

Donna Crane, policy director for NARAL Pro-Choice America, said abortion opponents "want an abortion ban in private insurance, and that's not neutrality at all — that's a radical departure from current law. They want something far more extreme than where I think the American public is."

2. Yesterday , Barbara Boxer reminded everyone the Hyde Ammendment
is law and still covers this bill. The Hyde Amendment provides:
NO Taxpayer money for abortions.

She said discussing this is just a distraction.

3. Well, hell....
...if they enact this, then they could make the terms so that it repeals the BS Hyde amendment.

5. yup.
you'll have a hard time selling that point around here. it does need to be repealed. i assume that once it is, any restriction within this plan will be repealed as well.

7. We need a separate law saying all denial of health care must be outside funded.
If zealots wish to deny a doctor/patient decision, that should not be paid for by tax dollars. They can have the laws, but must fund the enforcement themselves and it has to be equally enforced.
