Can I brag about my boss for a moment?
It's been exactly one year since I transferred to a new department at work under my current boss and he's the greatest. He believes in taking time off. He believes in looking out for family first. When I walked into his office and apologetically told him we had no babysitter for the next day, he gave me a "you're apologizing why?" look. When I was working myself to death on our budget this past spring, he instructed me to go to a baseball game. And now he's nagging me to get updated pictures of my family in the office. Is this relevant to a political site? Sure. If every workplace environment was like this, the country would be much better off.

2. That's a good boss who understands people.
I'm married to one, so I hear and know that what's important to him is important to his employees, and they all agree.

3. and i will bet you are a better employee because of your boss's attitude
toward family and your personal time. It amazes me how many bosses will work you raw, and wonder why productivity goes down. it's not about money, really. it's about treating a person with dignity and respect, and valuing them and their contribution. you give people some leway... you treat them like people.... you will get their best work. and they will go that extra mile for you as well.

8. I'm in upper management for a company, been with them since 05 and
one of the best perks about the job is a lot of the ideas/attitudes you highlight in your post.

18. It's so true. I will go to the ends of the earth for people (bosses, clients, friends, etc.)
who treat me with respect, appreciate me, and reciprocate once in awhile. But people who take advantage of me, or take me for granted, or disrespect me do not get my loyalty for long. Why is that so hard for employers to understand?

4. Good for him.
There's no reason why a boss can't also be a kind, caring person. In fact, I would work harder for someone like that, just to not let him down.

10. Sounds like my boss
If its for the family, he doesn't much care and encourages me to take time off. He has a big family himself. Some bosses are great. Some suck

12. Great bosses make it desirable to go to work.
My current immediate manager is a fantastic manager. Much the same as you described, time off flexible time and treats you like a human being.

Traveling under him is fantastic, he expects you to travel with some comfort, the bigger car, nicer hotel room and nice restaurants. He feels its reward for being away from the family.

I am afraid he will retire with the retirement offering the company just offered employees over 57.

13. LOL! Too many corporate environments give lip service to their employees...
It's nice to know there is still an atmosphere of respect. That's where morale and productivity are realized together.

14. My employees are great people.
I moved my office recently and right in the middle, I got sick as a dog. I was out for three days straight - the longest I think I've ever been sick. When I came back, they had not only moved my office, but had unpacked everything, made little signs "Welcome Home!" - even wrote in the sand of my little faux zen garden bowl "Home Sweet Home". I almost cried it was so sweet.

I would sacrifice anything for them. They deserve it.

15. Enjoy him while it lasts.
I used to be just like that.

It was a career limiting move, but I wouldn't change a thing.

16. I would like to add something
Time off is part of my benefit package in my union's contract, but we know that a boss can find ways to make you feel miserable just for asking.
