DEATH PANEL: Stephen Hawking wouldn't have a chance in the U.K
Edited on Tue Aug-11-09 10:59 AM by Pryderi
lol! The moron doesn't even know Stephen Hawking was BORN IN THE UK!

From: Investor's Business Daily

http://www.ibdeditorials.com/IBDArticles.aspx?id=333933006516877

The U.K.'s National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) basically figures out who deserves treatment by using a cost-utility analysis based on the "quality adjusted life year."

One year in perfect health gets you one point. Deductions are taken for blindness, for being in a wheelchair and so on.

The more points you have, the more your life is considered worth saving, and the likelier you are to get care.

People such as scientist Stephen Hawking wouldn't have a chance in the U.K., where the National Health Service would say the life of this brilliant man, because of his physical handicaps, is essentially worthless.

The British are praised for spending half as much per capita on medical care. How they do it is another matter. The NICE people say that Britain cannot afford to spend $20,000 to extend a life by six months. So if care will cost $1 more, you get to curl up in a corner and die.

5. What they'll say next is, "Stephen Hawking would've been able to
walk and dunk a basketball if he had gotten the good ole USA health care"

2. Resources are limited! We only have so many hospital beds, organs to transplant, etc.
There has to be some methodology for making these decisions.

3. yes but eugenics is not a good methodology.
unless you're white, in perfect health, not old, and vote and pray the right way.

4. I don't think that voting and praying should be part of the metric
But I think that if it comes down to it, I'd prefer to give a kidney to an otherwise fit 30 year old than a 58 year old paraplegic.

6. what if you were ordered to give kidneys!
Hah. Let's go skeer us some republicans.

The government is going to order people to give kidneys to deadbeats, hoe-moes, drug addicts, welfare moms, and environmentalists!

Oh the horror. Obama will personally cut out your kidneys himself in a bizarre birther ritual, using the traditional tribal spork.

:silly:

7. Wow, the lies are blatant, aren't they?
It's like... astonishing. Jaw-dropping.

It's worse than those Medicare recipients campaigning against... government-run health insurance.

9. Truly, one of the funniest gaffes yet!
But someone needs to push it. Things like this are pure gold, from a PR point of view. We need to gather up some of the best ones -- this one, of course; also the one where the guy screams "Keep your government hands off my Medicare!", things like that.

12. Yeah, not only born in the UK, he LIVES THERE and has survived
much longer than most people with ALS.

Part of the Wikipedia article said that he was rushed to the hospital in April 2009 and was doing fine.
