Dodd out of cancer surgery, 'resting comfortably'

Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) announced Tuesday he underwent successful surgery for early-stage prostate cancer and is recovering ably.

The senator’s office said Dodd will remain hospitalized at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York for “a few days.”

“After a brief recuperation at home with his family, he is looking forward to getting back to work later this month on behalf of the people of Connecticut,” said a statement by spokesman Bryan DeAngelis.

Dr. Peter Scardino, surgery chairman at the cancer center, released a statement that also called the surgery a success and said Dodd is “resting comfortably.”

“It is anticipated that he will be able to return to full activity within a few weeks,” Scardino said.

Dodd, the acting chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee, announced his diagnosis on July 31 at a news conference in Hartford, Conn. Dodd also said the news won’t affect his reelection plans next year.

“I’m going to be fine. We caught this early,” he said at the time. “If you get an early detection of prostate cancer, it’s very, very manageable. So the good news I’m going to be back out and doing all the things you have to do to represent my state."

Dodd described prostate cancer as “very common,” noting that one out of six men who live into their later years are diagnosed with it.
