Will someone please explain to me what the AP News really is?

I know that newspapers, news stations, and news radio have their own reporters, but what the HELL is AP, and why do other media publish their stuff?

Are they a newspaper? A news station? A news radio? Or are they a futuristic style corporation whose sole purpose is to manipulate and brainwash the population and who answer to no one?

they've been around a long time but have morphed into something not so great at times imo. Some stories are more slant/opinion than news.

At one point they were the pinnacle of investigative, objective journalism. Now there's a distinct slant to their reporting, and the quality has dropped considerably.
