Adopt your conservative elder! (Why there is hope) |
|
My wife told me that her mother was scared about the healthcare reform.
So I decided to call her and did my best to reassure her.
She is a conservative, quite racist, but I would say that's the way she was brought up, people of her generation have this almost natural type of racism that make them be fearful of people of different races, creeds and nationalities. She is not racist in speech but she does not feel too confident among people of other background. For instance we could never get her to come with us to Mexico. She was scared to be taken hostage or singled out for being a Yankee.
She is also anti gay marriage and very conservative in her social views. But she was obviously upset at the Republicans by the end of Bush's first mandate.
Anyway I managed to calm her down, told her that the death panels were a big lie and explained how the health insurance industry was lobbying and doing whatever they could to not lose their good business.
It took me about 10 minutes but she felt much better towards then end.
And then she said something that almost brought tears to my eyes: "I pray every night for Obama to succeed". Wow. I was speechless.
There is hope!
