Healthcare Debate Increasingly Demoralizing

As one of the 47 million Americans without health insurance, and one with a pre-existing condition- Type 1 Diabetes, the healthcare debate in this country is getting increasingly demoralizing to me. This is not only because the debate on this issue has seemed to sink into a mindless squabble about things that are not even true, such as "death panels" but because once again it seems that instead of intelligently discussing an issue our country is relegated to pitting citizen against citizen. Not only is our country being sucked into arguments that do not even exist, but this "debate" is bringing out the very worst in our country.

I thought it was pretty common knowledge during the last election that our healthcare system was broken. A Presidential candidate campaigned on fixing that system and won a smashing victory. Now, the forces of greed have risen up to pit American against American once more, and have convinced folks once again to oppose things that would lead to the betterment of their own lives. In the process the weaknesses of our country are exposed for what they are, and they are dividing us once more.

One of the greatest weaknesses of our country and one that is really rearing it's ugly head in this "debate" is greed. It is very demoralizing to hear people saying that I want a government handout and that I should get off my ass and get a job if I want insurance. I have worked every since I was able and have never asked the government for anything. However, because I have Type 1 Diabetes I cannot afford to buy insurance. Why?? Because of the greed of the insurance companies. They cannot make a profit off of me so like millions of others I am worthless and allowed to fall between the cracks. I might not have to go in front of a "death panel" but to those folks I might as well just die for what I am worth to them.

And they are not the only ones displaying their greed. If you look at the folks that are hollering and screaming and making such fools of themselves at these townhalls there are a bunch of older folks who undeniably have Medical insurance through the government. A government plan is just fine when it covers their sorry asses but when a government option is mentioned that I would pay for, they go balistic. They are so selfish that they feel they should be able to suck the government dry but nobody else should.
