I covered up Glen Beck's books at Costco today.

I put other books on top so that people couldn't see them. Is that wrong? It didn't feel wrong.

24. They are "best-sellers" not because they fly off the shelves at bookstores ...
They are "best-sellers" because right-wing billionaires and organizations buy them in bulk to prop up the sales figures. The fact that they are "best-sellers" is an illusion.

54. The exact same amount of books would sell, dumbass.
If some random shithead wants a Glenn Beck book, he will find it, no problem. Do you really think that a half-assed attempt at hiding a giant stack of a bestseller will stop anyone from finding them for more than a minute? Glenn Beck fans are nothing if not determined.

2. As an author whose books
have been sold at Costco, I wish you hadn't done it. It's one thing to have political views, but it's another thing to disrupt commerce in a sneaky way.

And, yes, I'm sure you don't think you were sneaky about it.

But it's a childish thing to do, and it accomplishes nothing, contributes nothing...................

Nah. I think I'll hide a book instead.

Good grief.

31. Look at the posts cheering this on -
no better than freepers.

I am appalled.

People who work in book stores have told me what a pain in the ass it is to have to and put displays back together after one of these jobbos goes through.

My friend Matt was a manager in a bookstore, as liberal as anyone can be, and he said to me that "the worst part of all this is that these assholes think they invented this particular bit of stupidity. Then we have to straighten it up ten times a day while these Einsteins pride themselves on their creativity."

The people who work in these bookstores are overwhelmingly Democrats.................

Then I would look down and see the price tag and say "what would Jesus do?" and of course I wouldn't strangle that book. Well, I'm not so sure...

44. Let me explain it to you -
The woman was on a private phone call. She wasn't talking to HopeHoops. Where did he get off telling her to shut the fuck up and hang up?

He was way out of line.

I'm in a bookstore, looking through a book, and a stranger, maybe it's HopeHoops, says to me that I shouldn't buy that book, for what ever reasons, and I tell him to go fuck himself.

He was way out of line.

In the first instance, HopeHoops was invading the woman's space and using vulgarity to try to intimidate her. She would have been perfectly within her rights to tell him to go fuck himself.

In the second instance, my personal space is invaded by some stranger telling me what he thinks I should do. I am perfectly happy to tell him to go fuck himself.

Now that I've played along with your little game, the one where you pretend to be stupid when I know you're not, I'll leave you now, and if you're still "confused," well, maybe someone else can explain it to you..........

35. And that's EXACTLY what it does!
I work at Costco. My warehouse has a woman who does this EVERY time she visits. I have to go right behind her and fix her handiwork. I once walked up to her as she was turning all the McCain DVDs backwards, while leaving the Obama DVDs facing outward and told her that she was wasting her time because no one was buying them anyway. She replied that she was "just exercising her freedom of speech". Um... not so much.

Suppressing the free speech of others, in such a petty and passive aggressive way doesn't advance progressive policy. It's annoying ineffective censorship and all it really says to anyone is that an insecure liberal was here.

We always try to play fair and take the high road, but that tactic only works in a perfect world.

is that these people who are being so creative and meaningful in their sad-assed, lame attempts at "protest" haven't the slightest idea that what they're doing is a kind of censorship, and they'd scream their sorry lungs out if someone tried to tell them what they should and shouldn't read.

57. How about putting notes inside the Beck books?
Print up a bunch of little slips of paper that says, "You're an idiot." and place them in the middle of the book for the reader to discover halfway through the book. Or perhaps a positive message about liberals or a damning quote from the author? Be creative if you want to protest.

58. Why?
Besides massaging your own ego, why do something so stupid? What does it matter to anyone what people want to read?

A positive message about liberals is that we believe in individual choice, without judging or censoring.

Or commenting.

How pathetic is someone's life if they spend their time writes things on small pieces of paper to slip into books they don't like at bookstores?

60. I don't think it would be pathetic.
It actually does matter to me what other people read. It matters to me what they watch on TV too. It matters to me because these people vote and affect my life with their decisions. I don't think it's a liberal value to withhold a comment about someone's choices. You have demonstrated your own judgmentalism by making your comments here about others choices to express themselves by using terms like "stupid" and "pathetic."

If I want to add to the value of a book by informing the reader that they are an idiot then I am just exercising my first amendment right to free speech. I wouldn't be vandalizing the product or creating work for a bookstore employee.

But now, is it against their policy to take a book into the restroom with you and take a dump on it? Yes, I know. It is not allowed, and it may be considered shoplifting to bring an item into the restroom, even if you had to just relieve yourself on it. There are no easy answers.
