"Jesus never said HOW to help the poor, he just said DO IT"
Paraphrasing a caller on a Minnesota KTNF call-in show.

I thought it was profound.

12. excuse me?
jesus was a jew, the torah was the only "testament" he knew.

i presume you are referring to certain christians who pick and choose the angry god passages of the torah (and ignore the loving god passages of same) to rationalize their own personal hatreds?

This is why a lot of us can no longer affiliate with the Christian religion. Some twisting of ideas is so overwhelming, you wonder whether to laugh or cry.

23. Didn't Jesus renounce the old teachings?
Specifically, the "eye for an eye" and "vengeful God" ideas?

There are plenty of examples of ugliness in the Old Testament such as slaves, utterly destroying your enemies, slaying non-believers and brutal treatments of "sinners" that Jesus would have deplored, from what we know of his preachings.

He may not have specified it literally, but you've got to admit his message was one of peace towards ALL people, not just his supporters.

33. the "eye for an eye" thing was always vastly misunderstood
Edited on Fri Aug-14-09 09:16 PM by unblock
it was meant to be a LIMIT on punishment, not a prescription for brutality. rabbinical thought (to the extent that rabbis agree on anything) is that it is best interpreted as "NO MORE THAN an eye for an eye".

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eye_for_an_eye

i understand that jesus did away with some things, such as kosher eating laws, but i don't know if he dismissed anything else from torah.

37. Jesus brought us a "New Covenant".
The Old Laws no longer apply.
The New Law = The Sermon on the Mount.

Any "Christian" living by the Old Laws, or trying to force others to do so has missed the whole point of Jesus and the "New" Testament.

2. Exactly, but the Dispensationalists
especially the ones exemplified by The Family, have dispensed with every single word that came out of his mouth in favor of a loopy Determinism that says the rich and powerful can do no wrong, ever.

These are the people mainstream Christians have failed to speak against for over a century in the name of an illusory Christian solidarity.

and that's probably why they hate Catholics so bad for "screwing them over". It takes some contortions to get to their way of thinking and include Christ as well.

18. So tell us what you are doing to help the poor -
Edited on Fri Aug-14-09 07:20 PM by stray cat
if we want government to offer more help - we need to pay more for the government to do it. If you want non-government help - they need volunteers and donations. Do you have a spare room in your house you can let someone move into free of charge?

24. I don't profess to be a Christian
In fact, I'm a vehement and sincere atheist.

However, I do donate to food banks and charities and volunteer my time to worthy causes.

And I support government providing help where help is needed.

I don't see how inviting someone into my house somehow validates my concern for the poor.

28. Jesus had no use for governments or companies or pretty much any organized anything
He lived in a society that had the greatest social welfare program the world had ever seen, yet he never organized a march on Rome or even Caeseria to increase the bread dole.

When he told the disciples that when he was naked they clothed him and what they did for the least of his brothers he did for him, he didn't mean what the Roman government did for the poor or even what the Governor of Syria did for the poor. He meant what you, as an individual did for the poor.

Now Scrooge on the other hand refuses to help the poor because he pays taxes to the government and it was the government's job to help the poor. A completely un-Christian message which he realizes by the end of the book.
