39. Amen to that. The utterly dependant can't think of a world without Corps
While those who have learned what it is to be able to provide for nearly every need with their own to hands watch as the resources, biodiversity, and space needed to do it are destroyed, never to return.

It really is incomprehensible that many people never travel outside their own state, let alone were ever able to travel the world and see other cultures that are now just a memory.

17. Quite articulate in fact
Clearly stated and purposeful.

Now of course you are correct that The Man is not threatened in any way by people posting on the internet, or by online petitions, or by mass phone calls from irate citizens. None of that works as history, recent and distant, points out. So that then begs the question, "What does it take?"

And your answer is?

Of course many of us are doing many other things and your presumption otherwise once again displays your supreme consistency in pulling a red herring out of your hat.

32. Funny, rightwingers and pretend Democrats
always use 'The Man', whatever it is supposed to mean when attempting to undermine the justifiable anger of the American people.

I looked it up a while ago and it seems it is meant to imply that anyone expressing anger at the government is 'a hippie'! I can understand why rightwingers would 'accuse' someone of being a 'hippie' and consider it an insult as they are still enraged over that period of history that produced the Civil Rights Act eg. I've even asked a few of them why they become so enraged at the mere mention of 'the sixties' which never made sense to me. Most of their responses were pretty incoherent but peppered with words like 'The Man' and 'lieberal morons' etc.

But whenever I've seen these same talking points coming from Democrats against other Democrats, because they were carefully thought up 'attack phrases' for the right to use against Democrats, I don't know what the point is.

If 'The Man' as I have read, is a phrase describing those in power who are working against the people, then why would a Democrat use rightwing attack phrases to mock the frustration of people who are rightfully angry? As a Democrat are you not on the same side as the OP, and if so, is there no other suggestion you might have as to what people can do to stop the corruption in government, other than attack a fellow Democrat, and with rightwing, Rush Limbaugh-type, rhetoric?

Maybe you can explain this adaptation by the left of the worst of the right's propagandistic rhetoric designed to undermine Democrats? Righties have explained their reasons to me. I'm interested in hearing a 'leftie's reasoning.

35. Actually, no.
Edited on Sun Aug-16-09 05:16 PM by HamdenRice
If you were around in the 60s and 70s, "the Man" was used by smart literate progressives to ridicule the nihilistic, simplistic views of the far left, who managed to destroy the civil rights movement and anti-war movement. Assuming you were around when the phrase was used, I'm a little surprised you don't know this. Or maybe you weren't around, and are only learning about the term from, as you put it, "right wing" sources.

Gil Scott Heron (I sincerely hope you know who he is) used "the man" to devastating affect in his spoken word poem, "Brother," although he ironically applied it not to "the authorities" but to a caricature figure of a person who would probably use terms like "the man". DU's Democrat-hating Trotskyite extremists, doomers, let it failers, and other nihilists remind me of the targets of ridicule of the 1960s that were so perfectly lampooned by Gil. (Many critics believe that the poem was aimed at the real life person, Amiri Baraka/Leroy Jones):

Brother
Gil Scott Heron

We deal in too many externals, brother.
Always afros, handshakes, and dashikis.

Never can the man build a working structure for black capitalism.
Always does the man read Mao or Fanon.

I think I know you would-be black revolutionaries too well.
Standing on a box on a corner, talking about blowing the white boy away.
That's not where it's at, yet, brother.

Calling this man an Uncle Tom,
And telling this woman to get an afro,
But you won't speak to her if she looks like hell, will you, brother?

Some of us been checking your act out kinda closely.
And by now it's looking kinda shaky, the way you been rushing people with your super-black bag.
Jumping down on brothers with both feet because they are after their B.A.
But you're never around when your B.A. is in danger.
I mean your black ASS.

I think it was a little too easy to forget that you were a negro before Malcolm.
You drove your white girl through the village every Friday night,
While the grass roots stared in envy and drank wine.
Do you remember?

You need get your memory banks organized, brother.
Show that man you call an Uncle Tom just where he is wrong.
Show that woman that you are a sincere black man.

All we need you to do is SHUT UP AND BE BLACK.
Help that woman.
Help that man.
That's what brothers are for, brother.

The protests died off quickly after the draft ended but the war continued unabated. After Nixon bombed the Vietnamese into submission during the Christmas, 1972 bombing campaign the American participation in the war was over in six weeks. Humans have such selective memories.

72. I didn't say they failed. I said they were destroyed.
The Civil Rights movement had spectacular victories. It could have had more spectacular victories, but it was destroyed by nihilists from the Black Panther Party and even more bizarre groups like the Symbionese Liberation Army and Black Liberation Army, who destroyed the movements cross racial appeal and drew in violent repression of the state. The same is true of the anti-war movement, which was destroyed by the Weathermen and the like.

If only know-nothing nihilists -- the modern day version of which is the OPer and his cohorts here -- hadn't gotten involved, those movements would have completely changed society.

Exactly what rightwingers say. And those 'lefties' I mentioned above, pretend democrats. There are not that many of them, but they show up whenever the subject of the sixties arises and it's hard to tell the difference between them and the wingnuts on that subject.

Maybe you can give some examples of who those 'nihilistic far lefties' who set out to destroy the civil rights movement were?

And btw, it is not necessary to have been present during an historic period to be informed about it. Sometimes it is better not to have been there as you are without the biases that probably existed during all such events.

The fuckers are claiming victory. I am so sick of fighting. We worked our asses off to get Obama elected. We spent the limit on contributions: money we could really use right now, we canvassed, we called, we even turned my rock-ribbed repuke father-in-law into a believer. You can post your shrugging emoticon, but the facts are that one of the platforms of the election is going down, and with it all the hope.

I know, heresy...

But I think the greater offense is how the majority of elected Democrats appear to be selling out people for money interests and personal power.

Never in my life have I been more convinced that the entire spectrum of politics at the national level is corrupt beyond all hope. What's left is a public grassroots movement - a political insurgency if you will, to clean out everything - regardless of party who won't put the people first. And if the "laws" get in the way of putting people first, then even the laws need changed. And if the constitution gets in the way of putting people first, then the constitution needs to be changed or discarded.

People. First.

Period.

It's time.

68. Left and Right - are the one -
Yes you are quite correct - it simply fascinates me the manner in which left wing / liberals Believe in democrats as an "alternative" to the republicans. There is some excellent literature on this type of attitude, what astounds me is that people do not realize that it is their own party which must be watched the keenest - Obama should be held under greater scrutiny than Bush - Why ? Bush was at least honest, he told us he was a bastard, Obama tells us he is a saint, and there fore should be trusted.

It is illegal to use propaganda directly against the population of the US by the US government, hence they employ UK PR houses such as Knowltons, and of course vice versa, and the CIA simply uses papers like the Guardian and Observer to deploy their Myths because they know the LEFT trust their newspapers and will accept more willingly what they are told. From here the lie simply wafts over the Atlantic to New York for immediate dissemination.

The saddest thing is that the right wing KNOW their party are corrupt and therefore do not simply accept what ever is told to them - it is a shame the left have become such bleating wool growers.

Is that Foucault in your Avatar, it actually looks like him during his meeting with Chomsky.

Audas.

63. There is only one party: the Money Party.
We don't have a democracy, we have a plutocracy. The only interests our government protects are the monied interests. The voters are just herd animals to them.

74. I'm sure the top 20-25% know exactly where their investments are.
The rest are working class and below there are no 401k's or investments. Don't tell anybody though... apparently it's a big secret since you don't even know.
