When I try to post a response on DU, I get a notice that |
|
my computer is not accepting cookies. I increased the intolerance for cookies on my computer because my new computer (Vista) is so slow and I think it is due to the incredible number of cookies that attach themselves to my computer. I mostly use DU, and I empty my cookies regularly. Any suggestion as to how I might handle this? Is anyone else having this problem? Why does DU attach so many cookies?

1. Try using a 'custom' option... |
|
...that allows per-session cookies but not third party cookies and you should be alright again. And if you're using IE, I humbly and strongly urge you to look into Firefox. Not only is it better, more manageable, and capable of being made much safer...its also downright FASTER. =)

I like IE much better that firefox. I've actually timed loading different websites with both firefox and ie and ie always comes out to be the fastest. For me that has been true for a long time now in fact all the way back to when I was on windows 98.

4. Vista's slowness has nothing to to with cookies . . . |
|
Or rather, if there's any effect from cookies, it's minuscule. Vista is a lumbering bear of an operating system and without really fast hardware is ... going ... to ... be ... slow.

On the other hand, you could just wait for Windows 7 and get a cheap upgrade, might be free if s/you/OP just bought the current machine.

44. Well, I have until next July to upgrade |
|
Apart from a hiccup with my wifi driver after I installed it it's been completely smooth sailing. I'm a lot more impressed than I was with XP, actually; this is the best edition of Windows MS has put together for years (I've been working in the computer industry much of my career - 1985-2005 - and still make some side income beta testing/troubleshooting now). Normally I'd be 'wait for the first service pack before installing a new OS' but in this case I say Go For It.
In fact, I feel a little dumbed down by it because everything just works as I expect it to, so I haven't needed to spend any significant time troubleshooting things with this release, and thus haven't spent as much time reading obscure tech support docs and so on as I usually would. So I updated Linux on another machine to keep myself challenged :-)

I was never a particular fan of Vista but it should run fine with a configuration like that. Mine did (before I switched to 7), and with only half that amount of RAM too - single-channel, at that.

16. I've seen those tips before, but most of them disable things I'd rather have . . . |
|
Which is why the marketing/engineering guys at Microsoft put them in Vista in the first place.
Knowing Vista was a hog, I bought a fast new machine, and *my* user experience has been (for the most part) quite satisfactory. I'm hoping Windows 7 will be quite zippy by comparison, and I'll notice substantial improvement.

10. Yes, this is true. OP... |
|
...you said you are new to Vista. If your system is having problems running speedily, you might want to disable 'Aero'. Its the generic name template for all the pretty, unnecessary things that Vista likes to do. I even turn it off on computers where its not needed, because it really is the singlemost disgusting piece of bloatware I've ever laid eyes on. The little flippy taskbar is cute...well, once. =)

What it looks like begins to really matter. While I've turned off the sidebar and some of the other animations, the overall Aero look is something I'm not willing to do without. Different strokes/folks, I guess.

If you have more than one open at once and try to submit a reply, it'll fail. The error message will be something about inability to write to the site's cookies.

You can argue that cookies aren't "a problem" under Mac operating systems, but not that they're not present. Why do you think Mac-based browsers have the same options to delete cookies that Windows-based browsers do?

30. To help increase speed other than getting new hardware, |
|
try deleting your temp files. Press Windows key + R to bring up the run ultity. Then type in cleanmgr. From there you can delete them.
It also helps to delete the cache in your browser. You can also delete all of your cookies as well and set permissions so that only certain sites (like DU) can set cookies.

40. Cookies are negligble what you describe is your computer starving for more memory. |
|
How much RAM does your system have?
START > My Computer > (right click) > Properties > Lower Right hand corner.
RAM is insanely cheap now and since most computers are sold "ram limited" (fast processor for PR but RAM starved) it can make an incredible difference in perceived performance.
