The difference between our justice system, and other systems |
|
it goes beyond cultural, but the outrage in the US that you are seeing is based on the American belief that once somebody is convicted they are beyond redemption or compassion. We should also not look at the nature of the crime, or even ask if perhaps there was a mistake this. (Which even some of the Scottish relatives are now asking)
But the outrage is another look into the darker impulses of the US. We are not for redemption, no, our systems of justice are meant to punish period. In fact, we are all for executing the infirm and the mentally ill as well. This is part of the culture. It is a very dark part of the culture. Now compassion is impossible in this cultural imperative.
To me this also means that the US will not evolve into a more WE society until this eye for an eye mentality also stops.
As to this man being released. I have no say. it is THEIR justice system. That said, it speaks volumes about a system that is capable of compassion, and the underlying society. at THIS moment.
To those screaming the loudest who also happen to follow the Judeo Christian Tradition, compassion is a value... not just a word.
But in the final analysis. you can be outraged all you want... this is NOT your legal system. It is theirs, so we have no say. At least not beyond the tersely phrased diplomatic exchanges. You don't like it, don't visit the UK.

"To me this also means that the US will not evolve into a more WE society until this eye for an eye mentality also stops."
In case anyone misses the point: the ruling class hates the very idea of a "WE" society.

6. After the last eight years I concludded |
|
that Americans either are not hurting enough or are too well propagandized to believe that any civil disobedience is way too radical.
So yes, call me a defeatist.

If you didn't care, if you didn't want it to be different, you wouldn't have posted your OP.

5. Our system would have let him go too. |
|
He would have cost the corporate run penal system too much money. Better to dump him on somebody else and save a few bucks.
