Can anyone top this embarrassing teabagger story? |
|
Edited on Sun Aug-23-09 03:10 PM by dem629
(OK, strictly related to the kind of teabagging we talk about here.)
Yesterday the local teabagger organization held a rally to protest health insurance reform, taxes, socialism, the common cold, mosquito bites...everything they can think of to complain about.
Today there's a front page story about it in the paper, complete with a picture of some of the teabagging enthusiasts.
Included in the picture, front row, are my parents.
So far I have received two calls. "Hey, saw your parents in the paper today...."
Top that.

I'm on SS disability and of course Medicare.
Prior to getting approved, they helped me out beyond what many families would/could do.
However, they of course couldn't do that forever, so when I was approved for disability, they ended up saving a lot of money that I know they would have spent on helping me out (including medical care).
And NOW...they're out there protesting the same gov't that assists me and the same type of gov't program that relieved them of the burden of helping me.
If you can make sense of their position, I'd love to hear it. :)
(PS- my position on the current health care discussion is: Medicare for all.)

Your story simply can't be topped. IT just can't. They care about you but they don't get that you're being helped by government services and that they are too by saving them the money they're willing to spend on helping you.

And not that I'm just defending them. They're responsible for their teabagging, not me. :) But they've just gone off the deep end after the November elections.
And, yes, they were very generous with me. Also, my mom volunteers for the elderly, visiting them in their homes and things like that. My dad volunteers at a local charity, and he also does his own collections in their neighborhood, things like food and old clothing to bring to the charity.
So they SOUND like liberals, right? But they are hard-core Republicans. Their big conservative issues are: gov't spending, big military and anti-abortion.
I can't figure them out. Believe me, I've tried.

maybe even more of it. I think the difference is in perception, whether they feel it's social justice, or whether they feel a slightly more paternalistic attitude toward the work they do.
Liberal: I will provide food to poor people because everyone deserves access to food.
Fundie Conservative (generalization, not specifics about your parents who might well not fall into this pattern at all): I will provide food to poor people because I am a gracious and good person (said while patting poor person on head), even though if they'd made better decisions in life they wouldn't be in this situation now, isn't it a shame? And this one here, bless her heart, I'm not even sure if she's deserving of my charity. I think she may have come straight from the beauty shop where she paid to get her hair cut (pursing lips in disapproval). I'm not saying poor people have to hack off their own hair with the kitchen shears, I'm not judging, I'm just saying if I were taking handouts I might have other priorities. Well, no matter, I just tell myself I'm doing Jesus's work. I just love poor people.

that says 'My parents are hypocrites', then call the paper. Ask them to take a pic of you and your sign, and then give the same brief explanation (as you did below above) of your medical story.
Or you could write a LTE.
Then again, you may not want to go that far, depending on your relationship with your parents.
If you don't, I completely understand, but it sure was fun thinking about the possibilities of the ensuing brouhaha. :)
