Conversation in an Oklahoma Wal-Mart
Took someone who is without transportation and pinching pennies on a $7/hour job trying to save enough for car repairs. A family member had sent a Wal-Mart gift card.

First time I had been in a Wal-Mart in a very long time. It was the middle of a work day and they were not terribly busy. We were waiting in the checkout line behind a retired couple. The line was really slow because the older couple had brought ads from other local stores to get matching prices.

A conversation ensued between the waiting shoppers. The first commented on the weird weather and the upcoming cold snap and possibility of wintry precipitation - even though we are well into spring here. I took the opportunity to comment on the effects of global warming. Another customer spoke up and said she thought the politicians who denied the existence of global warming were lying. Everyone including the store checker affirmed the existence of global warming. Another shopper handed the checker an item to be re-shelved. She didn't want to purchase it because it contained wheat gluten. This resulted in everyone talking about their pets and what they were feeding them in light of the recall. This led to a discussion regarding the concentration of manufacturing in one company - and the effects of corporate greed. A discussion that led, in turn, to criticism of Wal-Mart and specifically the manner in which employees are treated. I took the opportunity to observe that two of the other grocers in town have changed ownership - and changed some of their price structure.

It was an interesting conversation because some of the shoppers were unaware of the misdeeds of Wal-Mart - and appalled when they learned of them. Other shoppers were well aware of those same misdeeds. No one spoke out in support of the company or defended it in any way. And the checker? The checker greeted us all with a very big smile and thanked us for being so patient while we talked and waited our turn to check out.

4. Definitely
While I was walking the floor I had opportunity to speak to one of the store clerks. He was stocking shelves. Seems he is 70 some years old and recovering from a recent stroke - though I would not have known or suspected had he not mentioned it. Also seems he has been questioned about his drug use. I'm guessing they are looking for an excuse to get rid of him.

2. Thanks--this is encouraging to hear.
Maybe they are ready to rise up and leave Pukes behind them.
