How To Argue With Conservatives: Throw It Back In Their Faces |
|
Like they do in sports, point to the scoreboard. The Dems won the last two national elections in overwhelming fashion, and it's the Democrats that have super majorities in both chambers of congress. Finally, we control the White House.
Just throw it back in their faces.

1. I especially like to use 'family values' and 'fiscal responsibility', but |
|
more to the point, asking them why they think repubs are 'family values' when they openly and overtly support 'corporate values', which seem to be the antithesis of families?

"where were you the past eight years?", seems to stop them in their tracks...

9. and my fave when dealing with a religous nut |
|
"well, what did Jesus teach us about that? What did He say to do? You can't call yourself a Christian and turn your back on His words." This always blows fuses...

10. This is what I throw at the religious nuts |
|
Matthew 6:5-6 "And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 6But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you." Shuts them up pretty quick.

4. Arguing from popularity? |

They'll point to Bush's two terms as evidence--good evidence, in my opinion--of America's profound conservatism.

Just like a bad car that you bought from a crooked auto dealer, you bought your next car from someone else.
The best evidence of how bad a product or service can be found with a complete lack of return business.

6. They'll point out that Dem presidents tend to be single-termed. |
|
Popularity is not a good measure of value.

Tell them that Obama will win in 2012 by a higher percentage than Reagan did in 1984. He'll win all 50 states.

11. I tend to piss off this one gun-nut friend of mine |
|
And when I say gun-nut, I don't mean ordinary owners; I mean nut... this guy waxes philosophically and can come to tears talking about certain types of guns. Anyway, he's all big on how it's the people who look at the second amendment the way he does that keeps us free from government oppression, etc. When he spouted that off, I said something like, "Oh, bullshit. You like guns, and that's fine, but don't try turning your obsession into something noble. If you really believed in all the NRA crap you regurgitate, right-wing gun owners should have been the first marching in Washington to drive Bush out of office for his blatant disregard for the Constitution - particularly the 1st and 4th Amendments, but as long as they don't touch the 2nd, and you can play with your toys, you could care less. Hell, the NRA actively supported Bush over their "cherished" Constitution."
He left sputtering and didn't speak to me for a week.
