2. Pardon me for not believing "No deficit spending. The cost of health care reform under
the legislation is fully paid for: half through making the Medicare and Medicaid program more efficient and half through a surtax on the income of the wealthiest individuals. This surtax would affect only 1,700 households in the district. The surtax would not affect 99.4% of taxpayers in the district."

Our Rep is having a telephone call in on Sept 3. In the local Findlay paper today he said NO ONE in his district has asked him to support the public plan. I emailed the site to get in on the call in to about 30 people. Can't wait and plan on using this information. R&K

Wish I'd had this sheet on Monday for the forum. I'll pass on this link to my Move On coordinator so she'll have the information for the teach in tomorrow.

8. The problem is that it won't do anything for anybody's district until 2013
That would be four years with 80,000 more people dead for lack of money to pay for health care, and 1.3 million more bankrupted.

12. America’s Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009
America’s Affordable Health Choices Act of 2009
To provide affordable, quality health care for all Americans and reduce the growth in health care spending, and for other purposes.

OpenCongress Summary:
This is the House Democrats’ big health care reform bill. Broadly, it seeks to expand health care coverage to the approximately 40 million Americans who are currently uninsured by lowering the cost of health care and making the system more efficient. To that end it includes a new government-run insurance plan to compete with the private companies, a requirement that all Americans have health insurance, a prohibition on denying coverage because of pre-existing conditions and, to pay for it all, a surtax on households with an income above $350,000.

19. PA-2: 58,000 new insured, saving our hospitals $219 million EACH YEAR.
I live in a congressional district that covers most of Philadelphia's poor communities. I am stunned by the effect this bill can have on my community.

20. Another problem ... and a nurse practitioner solution
Many areas are "medically underserved."
So adding 70,000 people, per district, to the insured list
will mean longer waits and less care per person.

Now the usual idea for solving this problem
is that we should pay first-year doctors
to spend a year of two in such areas.
That means the poor are likely to get their health care
from inexperienced people, who are always leaving town
after a couple years. This is better than nothing,
but it is not high quality care.

A better solution, for many areas, would be to remove
the restrictions on nurse practitioners.
Right now about half the states won't let them practice
independently. A waste of talent. And a hardship
for the community.
