KS GOP rep Lynn Jenkins: "GOP is searching for "great white hope"
Jenkins: GOP is searching for "great white hope"

The spokesman for Kansas Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins is apologizing today for remarks the congresswoman made during a recent forum in Hiawatha, Kan.

"Republicans are struggling right now to find the great white hope," Jenkins said to the crowd. "I suggest to any of you who are concerned about that, who are Republican, there are some great young Republican minds in Washington."

Jenkins identified several Republicans -- Rep. Eric Cantor of Virginia, Rep. Kevin McCarthy of California and Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin -- as future movers and shakers.

All are white.

Comments are a great read! LOL Wingnuts are doing backflips trying to defend this.

And FYI, Jenkins is a MAJOR frootloop. She's Kansas's own Sarah Palin.

8. she apologized almost immediately. It is an old boxing reference. Maybe we are being hyper sensitive
with this one.

In bad taste, Yes. Beyond doubt

An attempt at a racial slur, I don't think so

No doubt in my mind. This is Kansas. Home of some of the worst redneck racists in the USA.

11. The boxing reference is racist!
Edited on Thu Aug-27-09 05:46 PM by redqueen
:wtf:

The media, eager for a "Great White Hope", found a champion for their racism in Jeffries. He said, "I am going into this fight for the sole purpose of proving that a white man is better than a Negro."<1> A furor was created at the fight, as a ringside band played, "All coons look alike to me".<2>

The fight was stopped after the 15th round when Jeffries' corner threw in the towel. Jeffries made no excuses at the time. After the bout Jeffries acknowledged, however, that not even in his prime could he have defeated Johnson<3>

17. She may not have intended it to be a racial slur,
but that only emphasizes how ignorant she is about the meaning and history of the phrase. The best construction that can be put on this incident is that she's a frakking moron.

20. She did. She's just too stupid to even know she's racist.
That's how stupid these people are... racist to the core, but they'll swear up and down they're not.

18. Obama responds:
In Massachusetts, Obama's viewpoint became known Thursday after Jenkins apologized earlier in the day (with the lame "If I offended somebody..." excuse).

White House Deputy Press Secretary Bill Burton told reporters:

I saw that report. I also saw that her spokesperson backpedaled and said that that was a poor choice of words. We obviously give Congresswoman Jenkins the benefit of the doubt."
