Kennedy procession to stop by Capitol Hill
@ 2:38 pm by Hill Staff

Still-evolving plans for Sen. Edward Kennedy's funeral procession through Washington on Saturday afternoon now call for the hearse carrying the senator's body to stop briefly at the east steps to the Senate on its way to Arlington National Cemetery.

Sources close to the family and Senate officials said Thursday that the procession would make a "rolling stop" for photographers and the public. Such a stop would be similar to the journey Kennedy's procession is taking today through the streets of Boston.

The event would be sometime between 3:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday. Kennedy's burial at Arlington is scheduled for between 5 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. It is closed to the public.

Kennedy served in the Senate from 1962 to his death late Tuesday. The area in front of the east steps is a broad, flat expanse of pavement often used for photos.

1. Too bad it isn't on a weekday
So everyone in the Senate could come out and bow their heads to the Greatest.

4. It's an honored tradition for Irish Americans to be carried past
places of importance to them. I know this because from time to time my Dad recalls that his uncle's funeral procession went past his favorite saloon.

7. Italians do it, too -
the funeral processions in my family are always wonderful, prompting lots of stories in the limousines on the way to the cemetery, and at the luncheons afterwards.

Memories, that's what we're all made of.

Sadly, though, the weather on Saturday is supposed to be pretty bad here - stormy and windy and rainy - the results of Tropical Storm Danny swinging past us.

But that weather would be fitting for a fine old sailor, and the name of the storm just suggests that Danny Boy himself is singing Teddy to the angels....................................
