The Roman Catholic Diocese of Bridgeport on Friday filed an appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court in its attempt to keep secret more than 12,600 court documents from clergy sex abuse cases.
The Connecticut Supreme Court has ruled twice that the documents should be unsealed.
This weekend, a letter from Bishop William Lori explaining why the diocese continues the fight will be distributed to parishioners at every Mass said throughout the diocese.
The Catholic Church, Lori said in the letter, has received "very different treatment under the law than other parties." Lori said the church is entitled to an unbiased and fair review of its claims in court and "regretfully that has not been the case in this matter."
Also Friday, diocesan lawyers asked conservative Justice Antonin Scalia, whose son is a priest, to reconsider their appeal to keep the documents sealed until the high court rules on whether to take up their case. Earlier this week, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg denied the diocese's request to keep the documents sealed for now.
