Desperate Interior Dept. Threatens Owners in a 1,395 Acre Land Grab for 9/11 Monument.

Path Cleared for Memorial to Flight 93

By SEAN D. HAMILL

August 31, 2009

Work will begin this fall on a memorial to those killed aboard United Airlines Flight 93 on Sept. 11, 2001, now that agreements have been reached to buy the last key pieces of land in Pennsylvania, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar said Monday.

The federal government will pay about $9.5 million to the owners of nine parcels near Shanksville, in rural southwestern Pennsylvania, totaling 1,395 acres, including the site where the plane crashed and one right-of-way, Mr. Salazar said.

Negotiations intensified at the end of last year when, with some parcels still in limbo, the Families of Flight 93, a nonprofit group that has been helping with the purchases, asked the Bush administration to get something done before it left office.

This summer, with time running short to get the first $58 million phase of the memorial completed in time for the 10th anniversary of the crash, the Interior Department set a deadline for the remaining landowners and threatened to take the land through condemnation.

1. 1400 acres for a memorial? Just how big is this thing?
That seems like a ridiculous amount of land for a memorial. Simply put up an obelisk or some such and be done with it.

2. You have to allow for a security parameter, gift shop to make money off the dead
local business tour bus parking lot, carnival rides, snack stands and a full mock up of the plane just before it was shot down excuse me, hit the ground, with 100+ mock tombstone heads so we call all mourn in that morbid way the press, tv talking news spokes models like to prattle on and on about and finally the high tech government run secret military instillation that will be located below ground that will be built by the highest bidder/republican pentagon friend as a bunker for the chaney's.

That's why!

7. That and...
if there's any missile parts on that acreage it's handy to be in control of the perimeter.

4. This is nothing more than an opportunity to sieze on the deaths
of those people by creating a tourist attraction.

Appalling.

6. Why?
9/11 seems to be the only justification you need, but it seems to me that this is $9.5 mil we could not spend.

Our priorities are not where they should be, IMO.
