Catholic League president: Atheists ‘out there to get us’

http://rawstory.com/08/news/2009/08/31/catholic-league-atheists-penn-teller/

Compares Penn & Teller to Nazis

Catholic League President Bill Donohue presented a paranoid side of his personality to Fox News Monday morning, declaring that “militant, dogmatic” atheists are “out to get” Catholics and dismantle American society.

“I’m talking about the extremists within ranks who have become very, very vocal,” Donohue said. “And over the last several decades what we’ve seen is an all-out assault. This kind of new atheism. This militant dogmatic fundamentalist atheism out there to get us.”

-snip-

“Whatever you might say about the Marxists, they wanted to tear down society to put something new in,” Donohue said. “But the new radicals are the nihilists, all they want to do is tear down the cultural edifice of American society. They are intellectually spent, they have nothing to offer.”

PENN & TELLER: NAZIS!

Donohue also discussed a recent episode of the Showtime series Penn & Teller: Bullshit! that focuses on the history of the Catholic Church, and in which Penn Jillette concludes: “If your morality is governed by anything personal, ethical, rational or humanitarian, then the Vatican is bullshit.”

30. It sure is. It's that persecution complex again, which always smacks of the
ridiculous in a nation with the freedom to pursue religion or not.

Billy, you want to feel persecuted, go be a missionary in a nation that would just as soon torture you and put you to death for your beliefs, you big crybaby.

HYSTERIA OVER IRISH CLERGY ABUSE

May 20, 2009

After nine years of investigation, Ireland’s Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse has published its findings. More than 30,000 children, most of them delinquents, passed through one or more of Ireland’s Catholic-run institutions from the 1920s through the 1980s.

Catholic League president Bill Donohue comments on the report today:

Reuters is reporting that “Irish Priests Beat, Raped Children,” yet the report does not justify this wild and irresponsible claim. Four types of abuse are noted: physical, sexual, neglect and emotional. Physical abuse includes “being kicked”; neglect includes “inadequate heating”; and emotional abuse includes “lack of attachment and affection.” Not nice, to be sure, but hardly draconian, especially given the time line: fully 82 percent of the incidents took place before 1970. As the New York Times noted, “many of them now more than 70 years old.” And quite frankly, corporal punishment was not exactly unknown in many homes during these times, and this is doubly true when dealing with miscreants.

Regarding sexual abuse, “kissing,” and “non-contact including voyeurism” (e.g., what it labels as “inappropriate sexual talk”) make the grade as constituting sexual abuse. Moreover, one-third of the cases involved “inappropriate fondling and contact.” None of this is defensible, but none of it qualifies as rape. Rape, on the other hand, constituted 12 percent of the cases. As for the charge that “Irish Priests” were responsible, some of the abuse was carried out by lay persons, much of it was done by Brothers, and about 12 percent of the abusers were priests (most of whom were not rapists).

The Irish report suffers from conflating minor instances of abuse with serious ones, thus demeaning the latter. When most people hear of the term abuse, they do not think about being slapped, being chilly, being ignored or, for that matter, having someone stare at you in the shower. They think about rape.

By cheapening rape, the report demeans the big victims. But, of course, there is a huge market for such distortions, especially when the accused is the Catholic Church.

Is there, in fact, a Catholic League, or is it just Bill and his mailing list?

13. Yeah , Billy, dogmatic atheists are coming to destroy you
even though it's a mystery to me what dogma we might be dogmatic about since atheism is pretty much a rejection of all religious dogma as silly.

I guess the noisier people are about what fine examples of religious rectitude they are, the less they can tolerate the mere existence of people whose crime is that they simply disagree.

If Donohue isn't careful, he's going to have to start looking over his shoulder, not for atheists but for men in white coats with butterfly nets.

March away from war.

Or your crucifix,
So please ignore us nicely;

Let us drink our beer
Battle over Jebus;
We'll watch from over here.

25. After thousands of years of persecuting those with differing beliefs,
the catholics are calling foul. I went to catholic school for 12 years, against my will, because of my parents beliefs, and I am against them as well as other organized religions - I consider myself an agnostic, rather than an atheist, but you all have my support.

When the athiests start burning catholics at the stake in public, then I will have some sympathy for the church.

26. Atheists "who have become very, very vocal"
Yes, atheists often use the resources of their huge, globe-spanning organization that's been around for almost 2000 years, has great influence over many governments, possesses a treasury of untold billions, and uses its bully pulpit to cause major legislative change.

Oh wait...that's the Church, isn't it? My bad.

I guess the not-so-subtle message here is that atheists should sit down and shut up--just like everyone who dares to disagree with the Church. Now that's progressive!

Funny, eh?

Personally, I think one has to be a bit of a moron to actually believe religions that were created and used to explain a scary world to a primitive people - but if it gives them comfort and doesn't bother me, I don't care. Believe in all the gods you want to - but they take it as a personal insult that atheists even exist.

39. Here's a clue:
You CAN'T be persecuted if you're the majority.

Like you, I don't give a crap if you want to worship at the altar of a talking horse, or an alien, or the easter bunny. It's none of my damned business, just as my belief system (such as it is) is nobody's concern but my own.

than be out to get the Catholic Church - like my laundry, shoe shopping and watching True Blood.

I doubt Donohue, who mostly sounds like he's off his meds everytime I hear him speak, can give one concrete example of how atheists are our to get Catholics. Has there been big marches of atheists going from church to church with torches boarding up the doors? Are Catholics being rounded up and sent to re-education camps by atheists (or anyone else, for that matter).

The endless hyperbole of those who hate Obama is really getting tiresome. It is such intellectually lazy bullshit.

47. This is one of the main things on the Faux News agenda evidently...

not just Catholics, in this case, but crazy Beck had a preacher from Dallas on last night who said "they" are trying to destroy the Judeo-Christian values this country was founded on.

It's a much more prominent theme being spoken out loud by the crazies, not just found within viral emails.
