Imus Shmimus: Who listens to the radio?
...YES- his comments were inappropriate, and Imus -and other radio gasbags like Rush, Beck, Savage, etc.- have an audience, somewhere. But WHO is the audience? I only ever hear the radio for a few minutes in the morning when it wakes me, up. The last time I listened to the radio at length was during the big blackout of August 2003 when I went to my car radio to find out what was going on.

Truck drivers? Retirees? The Self-employed? Who is listening, and when do they have time to do it? Personally, I wouldn't want to spend 'down' time listening to someone else's ramblings (which is what I spend the entire work week doing).

Just an honest question from a non-radio listener.

BTW- I'm at work now, but the internet, unlike a radio program, is both interactive and static -and doesn't require one's undivided attention to be useful.

1. Rush does have the lunch hour
And there are places where you can keep a radio on all day.

Heck you could listen to Rush at your computer if you wanted to (but I don't advise it).

Terrestrial radio is a barren wasteland. I now get a huge choice of music, and Howard Stern in the morning. For the record, Howard has relished all of this.

3. As a matter of fact
I'm listening to Stephanie Miller as I write this-I also listen to Randi and Ed Schultz whenever I'm in the car-I watched Imus on MSNBC-there are a lot of us who use radio as a tool for information and learning, which I look at the years of listening to Randi Rhodes has done for me.

7. I'm retired and I have the radio on NPR all day
Morning edition, the noon news, Diane Rehm Show, Fresh Air and All Things Considered and a bunch of classical music which is nice background noise for my ranting and raving. If I have to go to town, I'll listen to limbaugh about 15 minutes a month just to confirm what I already know, he's a liar and his students are fucking idiots.

8. Sadly My Passion Has Been Destroyed
Too much here to spit out all at once, but I'll preface this by saying I first got fascinated with radio as a little kid and dedicated 25 years of my life working in and around the medium. I've seen a lot over the years...having worked talk radio back in the "sane" days of the 80's and saw how hate radio got rooted and grew...and then the total destruction of the medium thanks to the consolidation and then monopolization of the airwaves that drove hundreds of local voices off the air and thousands of very talented people out of the business. Think of the deregulation of the airlines...and then think of airlines now being flown by crop duster pilots and you have the current radio landscape.

I still listen and work with radio...a lot of it in the new digital technologies these days and see tremendous potentials and opportunities in radio...especially if and when (and it will be a when) the large conglomerates self destruct (which is starting to happen). Around the house, I now listen to Internet Radio almost exclusively...I get several AAR affiliates, Pacifica stations, BBC and several dozen excellent music channels. In the car, the CD player usually gets a workout (recorded from my favorite Internet stations...including mine (modest plug)...and occasionally i'll pop on the local AAR affiliate.

I still scan the radio dial to hear what's going on, and have a website that allows me to access radios all across the country...so I scan the dial in many areas of the country throughout the day...from Jacksonville, FL to Long Beach, CA...and I hear how polluted the airwaves have become...between the mean-spirited hate radio station, mysognist sports talk and the mindless cookie-cutter music formats.

Satellite is more of the same of nothing IMHO....and I'm gonna take out a two year contract for that? No Sale. I'll be curious if Imus tries to go satellite now...and see if people are willing to pay to hear his bigotry and sexist crap.

9. I watched Imus on MSNBC daily.
I will miss his calls from Donald Trump. I enjoyed his program for the many diverse topics and people he presented us. I specifically enjoyed the fact that there was no religious hokey poky on Imus. We the viewers and the listeners are the losers because there is now nowhere we can go to get the same information. Who can Trump call on Fridays to tell us about "The Apprentice?"

I will not soon forget all the ho's that took out Imus. I wish that MSNBC would just shut the F up already. They did the deed now just stop talking about it and quit presenting all Black all the time. This is really overkill.

Most of all I know better who I must not vote for and that will last a lifetime or whatever is left of it.
