Poll question: Do you support single payer or the public option |
|
Edited on Sun Sep-06-09 07:45 PM by Juche
I support single payer, but part of me feels that if people want to opt out they should be able to. With the public option (aka the option to buy into medicare at any age) you get a single payer plan, but people can opt out of it and go with a private plan if they prefer that.
However, you can't opt out of paying for fire protection, or law enforcement protection. You can pay extra for coverage above and beyond that (security systems, personal guards, fire proof housing, etc) but nobody can opt out of fire or law enforcement protection. So the concept of mandating a social safety net that people cannot opt out of paying for is not new in our society.
I can understand the argument against single payer that people shouldn't be forced to join a plan they don't like. But that is how medicare and social security works (everyone is forced to join and pay for it). And it is how the fire, police, military and various other infrastructure programs work. Even the wingnuts don't turn down social security or medicare assistance. And the GOP is now 'defending' medicare, which is a forced single payer plan (unlike the public option, which is voluntary).
So do you prefer mandated single payer for everyone or single payer for those that choose it via a public option?

7. private option in which system? |

Do you mean a single payer system you can opt out of, or one you can buy additional private coverage for?

8. Let them have the option to choose |
|
a private plan if they want to keep what they have. When push comes to shove most of the conservatives screaming now will choose the public plan.
