Real Time w/Bill Maher preview: The Right-Wing Crusade to Demonize Elites
Say it loud: I'm elite and proud! The right-wing crusade to demonize elites has paid off. Now the country's run by incompetents who make mediocrity a job requirement and recruit from Pat Robertson's law school. New rule: Now that liberals have taken back the word liberal, they also have to take back the word "elite." By now you've heard the constant right-wing attacks on the "elite," or as it's otherwise known, "hating." They've had it up to their red necks with the "elite media." The "liberal elite." Who may or may not be part of the "Washington elite." A subset of the "East Coast elite." Which is influenced by "the Hollywood elite." So basically, unless you're a shitkicker from Kansas, you're with the terrorists. If you played a drinking game in which you did a shot every time Rush Limbaugh attacked someone for being "elite" you'd almost be as wasted as Rush Limbaugh.

I don't get it: In other fields -- outside of government -- elite is a good thing, like an elite fighting force. Tiger Woods is an elite golfer. If I need brain surgery, I'd like an elite doctor. But in politics, elite is bad -- the elite aren't down-to-earth and accessible like you and me and President Shit-for-Brains. But when the anti-elite crowd demonizes the elite, what they're actually doing is embracing incompetence. Now, I know what you're thinking: That doesn't sound like our president -- ignoring intelligence.

You know how whenever there's a major Bush administration scandal it always traces back to some incompetent political hack appointment and you think to yourself, "Where are they getting these screw-ups from?" Well, now we know: from Pat Robertson. I wish I were kidding, but I'm not. Take Monica Goodling, who before she resigned last week because of the U.S. attorneys scandal, was the third most powerful official in the Justice Department of the United States. Thirty-three, and though she had never even worked as a prosecutor, she was tasked with overseeing the job performance of all 95 U.S. attorneys. How do you get to be such a top dog at 33? By acing Harvard, or winning scholarship prizes? No, Goodling did her undergraduate work at Messiah College -- home of the "Fighting Christies," who wait-listed me, the bastards -- and then went on to attend Pat Robertson's law school.

I'm not kidding, Pat Robertson, the man who said gay people at DisneyWorld would cause "earthquakes, tornadoes, and possibly a meteor," has a law school. It's called Regent. Regent University School of Law, and it shares a campus with Robertson's Christian Broadcasting Network studios. It's the first time ever that a TV network spun off a law school. And that's all America needs -- more Christians and more lawyers. You see, years ago Pat became concerned that our legal system was coddling criminals, forgiving them instead of meting out that Old Testament "eye for an eye" justice Jesus Christ never shuts up about. So Pat did what any red-blooded, Hindu-hating, gay-baiting, glue-sniffing Christian would do: He started his own law school. And what kid wouldn't want to attend? It's three years and you only have to read one book. The school says its mission is to create an army of evangelical lawyers, integrating the Bible and public policy, and producing graduates that provide "Christian leadership to change the world." Presumably from round back to flat.

8. Isn't it amazing? I have two neighbors who vote GOP. They are working class Joe's.
There is NO reason in the world for them to vote Rep. EXCEPT abortion. That's what does it.

7. Real Time is back tonight. Sounds like a pretty good line up.
From HBO web site -

This Friday, Bill welcomes Dana Carvey, Fmr. Sen. Bill Bradley (D-NJ), Scott McClellan and via satellite Sheryl Crow, Laurie David and Rev. Al Sharpton. Tune-in Friday night at 11pm ET/PT and stay around after the show for Overtime our exclusive live web program.

I think we could do without Rev. Al Sharpton - had enough of him on TV this week. Not sure about Dana Carvey - just not into his humor and not sure where his political leanings lie. Bradley is smart, he'll hold his own no matter who they put on the panel with him.

And Snotty Scotty - you think he is still under the misconception that he can diddle the truth from the White House Press Room and not be called on his BS? He got so used to having a forum where he could spend vast amount of time not saying anything and defending Chucklenuts I'm not sure he won't pull a Novak and run when he is called out. I wish I could think that Snotty Scotty is just a benign simpleton repug but he spent too much time lying his ass off that I can't just ignore him.

9. I agree — good line-up.
Looking forward to seeing what McLellan is like when he gets out from behind the podium. It'll be interesting to see him sparring with Bill Bradley and Maher.

5. "Elite" is often used as a thinly-veliled synonym for Jewish...
...think about how the wingnuts like to use it!

12. Don't you remember the footage of Bush talking to rich people and saying...
Edited on Fri Apr-13-07 04:36 PM by applegrove
"Some people call you the elite, I just call you my base". Bush was wearing white tie and tails I think.

Bush does care about that "base". The only reason why he pretends to hate elites is because he wants the vote of Nascar Dads and the proletariat. For the same reason they also are into patriotism. Because these non-elite patriots give them close to a majority at the polls. Which they then translate into a majority with tricks and Supreme Court Justices.

It was Disraeli who first came up with the idea that conservatives had to come up with some "cause of the little people" in order for conservatives to have any chance to rule or win elections. Why would the voters vote in elite conservatives when they get nothing out of conservatism? So up with the patriotism and other tricks.

13. If his base is "elite", why does he surround himself with incompetents?

14. Cause he hates government and wants it to look comparatively bad
vs. big business. These elites were all rich people. Same as big business elites. They hate good governance. Cause it shows people there is another way. And profit is not perfect.

16. See he bought his own koolaid that private sector type people will
make for better everything. Bush is the CEO president even if he never was a real CEO.

He thought it would work in Iraq too.

18. As H.L. Mencken prophetically said..
“As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart's desire at last and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.” - H.L. Mencken

Not once but 4 times. Reagan twice and Boobya twice.

19. disagree
This makes me very sad.

Why is it that we can discuss Black culture, or the varying cultures in Iraq, but we can refuse to value people in our own country whose cultures differ mostly by georgraphy at the same level.
Is it really okay because "they" did it to us in the last election?

20. True that Mr. Maher compared stupid to 'country folk'
But I don't think his intent was to generalize so called "rednecks" as stupid. His point is that stupidity, ignorance, and incompetence is what Bush has surrounded himself with. People who graduate from Pat Robertson's school are not exactly the most credible people. He used the stereotype of redneck, country, "nascar dads" to make that point, but I don't think he was talking about the many, many bright people who come from rural areas and "The South" in general.
