HEY OBAMA, YO MAMA!
Edited on Wed Sep-09-09 08:48 PM by jtrockville
I remember when President Obama was campaigning. He told a story of his mother wrestling with insurance companies to pay her medical bills, while on her death bed.

How would any of his proposals address someone in his mother's situation?

Forcing us to buy health insurance will force us into the exact same situation.

INSURANCE IS A SCAM

4. Because Obama spoke of his mother while he was campaigning.
So I figure it's fair game to ask how he plans to help the folks who find themselves in the same situation. No?

9. How so? Has he proposed anything that would have helped his mother?
He wasn't shy about discussing her situation during the campaign. Why isn't it a fair question?

11. I heard it. Perhaps I didn't understand it.
I assume Obama's mother had insurance. Who else would she have been arguing with, on her death bed, for payment of her medical bills?

So how would forcing us to buy health insurance fix the problems his mother had? Please explain. I obviously missed something.

27. His mother was being denied coverage after she got sick.
One part of his policy will make it illegal for insurance companies to do this.

13. Please, what did I miss? Did Obama's mother have health insurance?
Making sure everyone has health insurance doesn't necessarily mean they'll be granted payment for medical bills.

19. If we're not going to regulate PREMIUMS then this is a farce.
Ok, so insurance companies will be prohibited from denying coverage based on preexisting conditions.

And the "exchanges" are going to be the method we use to try to induce insurance companies to "compete" with each other so they don't overcharge.

This will still leave premiums unaffordable on the basis of actual claims data and the for-profit model.

No amount of "competition" is going to change that!

Whether or not insurance is purely a scam, it is a mistake to think it is in any way the means which will get us to where we want to go.

22. I didn't hear anything about probitions on denying CLAIMS.
Did I missed it?

So what if an insurance company will issue you a policy? That just means they'll take your money. It doesn't mean they'll pay your medical bills. And we'll all be in the same bed (so-to-speak) as Obama's mother.

24. Ah, if only there were more of us. We need SINGLE PAYER.
The rest of this will just funnel money into gigantic compensation packages for executives, and profit for shareholders.

23. Why should I assume rules will change?
Insurance companies are profiting handsomely right now. Their obligation is to their shareholders (not their policyholders). They HAVE to maximize profits.

Unless there's regulation (which I didn't hear mentioned in the speech), they'll continue to do so.

Why assume otherwise?
