What would have happened if Imus had called Laura Bush "A nappy headed, whore?" |
|
Would Armstrong Williams and the other right wing shills be out defending him? How about James Carville and Paul Begala? Would they defend him? Would David Gregory be having marathon MSNBC sessions to show his solidarity with Imus? How about John McCain? Would McCain had said that he would have still went back on the Imus show after that? Would it have taken this long for MSNBC and CBS to have fired him?

Don't recall any nappy-headed Lady Vols, either.

5. This is one of the things he said about Hillary Clinton: |
|
On women: "That buck-tooth witch Satan, Hillary Clinton." <…> "I never admitted it when I went down there and got in all that big jam, insulting Bill Clinton and his fat ugly wife, Satan. Did I? Did I ever say I was sorry for that?" http://www.slate.com/id/2163872/nav/tap2/

There is nothing funny about making disparaging remarks about anyone. He was rude, crude and despicable. Now to get rid of the rest of the GOP pond scum on the airwaves....

10. You know, I realize that as a public figure, Senator Clinton is fair game. But |
|
a statement like that is neither funny or clever. Surely someone who thinks he's funny could do better than that.

7. I seem to recall at least one reference to Chelsea's hair that |
|
suggested that it was too curly/too kinky. I don't know if anyone ever called it nappy. I think she's been straightening it now, which is was kind of sad.

12. this is tangential to your post, |

but i learned something today.
yesterday i was more on the side of firing imus being too harsh, but something penetrated my thick head today. long story short, i'm a fan of a cutie patootie singer named clay aiken. clay went to afghanistan this past week as a UNICEF ambassador for education. (he's a former teacher.) video and photos of him there wearing the traditional clothing and beard of afghani men has made the rounds of gossip blogs today. he's a target of ridicule just by virtue of BEING clay aiken, so i'm used to it and i've come to expect it. the part i didn't expect was the cultural insensitivity. the traditional baggy pants, tunic and shaal he was wearing and the traditional greeting gesture he was doing were being used as points of ridicule. probably most the asshats who made those comments could care less about afghani tradition other than it was a convenient way to ridicule clay, and imus probably isn't a hardcore racist either, but that's really besides the point. the point is, one of our cultural traditions here is our nasty and ugly habit of cultural insensitivity, among other things. and the number one "exporters" of it all are shock jocks, pundits and gossips, legitimizing the behavior and even giving us tacit permission to do likewise.

"giving us tacit permission to do likewise."
THAT is what really bugs me about the hate jocks and their locker room gossip juvenile "radio shows". It seems to allow others to feel it is okay for them to also voice the tripe they hear.... It adds an air of "legitimacy" or it validates those ideas for them.
As we all know, repeat it enough times and people will believe almost anything ("Iraq-9/11!!!!!!)

Is that a slur? Or is it a truthful observation? Where do you draw the line? Maybe instead of criticizing their looks or other qualities that a person has no control over, public figures should limit their criticism of other public figures to their actions. So if you are going to call someone a whore, you'd better have proof that the person you called that is in fact a whore.
I have no problem calling members of the present administration liars because it's the truth and their words, which have been recorded for history, has proved that they are liars.
