1. My initial thought is no. |
|
I'd hate to see this day turned into another excuse to have a BBQ and take a quick weekend trip.
We shouldn't be "celebrating" national tragedies.

9. Assuming you irrationally believe MIHOP/LIHOP, which many people don't |
|
But of course that's another reason it shouldn't be made into a national holiday.

29. Why call it "irrational?" |
|
There must be some way to explain: Neo-cons wanting a war with Iraq during the Clinton years (Clinton said "no") Bush ignoring the August 6 PDB Bush and White House staff taking Cipro on 9/11/01 Bush sitting a doing nothing while 3,000 Americans are murdered Bush flying Osama's relatives out of the US without their having been questioned and while all commercial air flights were canceled Bush invading Iraq instead of Saudi Arabia Bush not finding the WMDs he swore Saddam had Bush closing all American bases in Saudi Arabia (what Osama wanted) and opening bases in Iraq Bush letting Osama go at Tora Bora ...etc.
Not to mention: The decades-old relationship between the Bush Family and the Bin Laden Family
We have a lot of mis- and under-informed folks in America: That's why 54% want the government out of Medicare and 10% either don't know or aren't sure Hawaii is a state.
Being ignorant doesn't make one "rational"

and MIHOP is unconvincing; I admit irrational might be a bit nasty, but since MIHOPers happily dismiss anybody who doesn't believe in their fantasy as a Bush puppet, I think I'm ok with that.

I dismiss the Bush administration too. They are liars.
I don't specifically believe anything, except that what we were told is surely mostly lies. There really is no sense in dissecting the minutiae.

|
Including the claim that OBL and Al Qaeda were in contact with our government up to and including 9/10/01.
And let's not forget that the Bush administration has told little in the way of truth.
I don't believe any specifics, but I do believe we were lied to about this.

|
Edited on Mon Sep-14-09 11:15 AM by havocmom
but, considering all aspects of how that tragedy was used to sell an agenda, such advertising might have an element of truth.
No holiday for 9-11. We don't celebrate tragedy and we would have to deal with idiots trying to move it to a Monday so there would be one more three day weekend to aid capitalism.

16. We have days to morn the dead... |

Sitting up a holiday to commemorate the single greatest failure in US History just doesn't sound right.
I mean, what would we do.
(1) Require national readings of My Pet Goat while wearing jingoistic, banana stuffed flight suits? (2) Hold a national lie off, with the greatest liar being give the George W. Bush of "Trutiness!" (3) Perhaps we would hold Cheney shooting contests where we all get shitfaced and shoot our friends in the face. (4) To commemorate the moment when each plane struck a tower, the Pentagon, or the ground we set of nuclear air bursts.
This is just a monumentally bad idea.

Sept. 11 is a day of mourning and doesn't need to be turned into a holiday for people to have a "final summer luau" of cookouts, beer, and corporations trying to make a buck off of holiday sales.

day off from work, a barbecue, shopping at the malls, and getting stuck in traffic. Plus it would be another national holiday within a week of Labor Day.
Making a commemorative date a holiday doesn't instill reverence by that act alone.

And several people don't even know what happened that day. I asked my cousin (who was less than 2 weeks old when 9/11 happened) if she knew what major event in history happened right after she was born, and she did not know. Both her and her older sister (9) do not know who Osama Bin Laden is.

If they mean a day off of work, government offices closed etc., then I'd say "no". To the best of my knowledge Pearl Harbor Day comes and goes without any of those trappings.
Of course, to the best of my knowledge I'm not sure that Pearl Harbor Day is considered a "holiday" per se.

In the grand scheme of things, 3000 people dead is not a huge deal. Why don't we have a holiday for car accident victims? Or cancer patients? I'm sure they're more numerous.
Nothing else about the event warrants holiday status. Even 12/7 isn't a holiday. I am not aware of any holidays that are based on a nation being attacked. I'm sure there are one or two, but they are most likely stupid and should not exist.
