Boner says he wants Congress to permanently defund ACORN

Republican Leader Seeks More Curbs on Acorn Funds
By Carl Hulse

Despite their victory this week on cutting off federal funds to the community organization Acorn, House Republicans are not about to let the matter go.

Representative John A. Boehner of Ohio, the Republican leader, on Friday demanded that Speaker Nancy Pelosi quickly hold a vote on a bill devoted solely to cutting off any future federal money to the liberal activist group.

His push comes because Republicans on Thursday added the Acorn funding ban to a college loan measure that has a long way to go in Congress – and which many Republicans oppose to boot. So the funding restriction included in that bill is not going to become law anytime soon.

“Now that the House has spoken in such resounding fashion, Speaker Pelosi should schedule an up-or-down vote on the Defund Acorn Act without delay,” Mr. Boehner said in a statement.

But that’s not likely to occur. Even though 172 Democrats joined House Republicans in voting for the Acorn proposal, the leadership probably won’t cave in to a Republican appeal for a separate vote, especially since so many Democrats have already insulated themselves politically on the issue by voting for the initial cut-off of funds.

Democratic aides said, however, it is possible that a ban on Acorn funding could be included in one of the annual spending bills coming up for final passage in the next few weeks, an approach that would speed enactment of the spending ban.

Republicans probably won’t be all that unhappy with any delay. It allows them to keep firing away at Acorn and it is clear they intend to milk this one for all it is worth.

6. Green Party?
Isn't that the party with its head lodged up the GOP's ass, happily grazing all-organic precompost nutrient?

10. Congress should end its own funding in response to the wrongdoing of some Senators and Reps.
That way they would be holding themselves as an organization to the same standard they're applying to ACORN.

11. OK sure. We'll put it as an amendment on the public option.
We'll permanently defund ACORN in exchange for the public option. Of course, it would be awful to have all those Republicans voting not to permanently defund ACORN.

13. That's kind of brilliant.

I'm expecting to hear about some insane pro-gun rider--like concealed carry of semiautomatic weapons in elementary schools--attached to the Senate version of health care reform.
