Gandhi and King Were Not Angry
I watched Inside Edition today and there was a clip of Glen Beck responding to a Nancy Pelosi quote. Pelosi had stated that she had seen the type of anger being displayed by the Republicans involved in the health care reform debate. Pelosi went on to say the end result of that anger was the shootings of a number of San Francisco politicians. In response Beck claimed King and Gandhi were angry, that is why they protested, and it was a shame that Pelosi was not around to stop their anger.

Although I know Glen Beck is always saying stupid things, but my problem with the quote is the fact that neither Gandhi nor King were angry. Each man wanted change, but they were not angry. In addition, they promoted peaceful protests, not the types of protests that Republicans have promoted. Furthermore, King and Gandhi did not push their supporters to bring guns to protests. Therefore, the protests of today are very different from the protests lead by King and Gandhi.

Finally, I find it interesting that Republicans are always using people like King and Gandhi when it seems to be convenient to them. On most other occasions Republican like Beck are calling these individuals communists and socialists. It is just ridiculous for people like Beck to use these individuals when they need to excuse their bad behavior.

1. Glenn Beck wouldn't recognize satyagraha if it bit him in the ass.
Which it wouldn't, of course, being nonviolent and all.

4. Angry? Perhaps,
But not ruled by anger.

We get angry when we see poverty, neglect, hatred, greed.

It's good to be angry about these things; it's what motivates us toward seeking justice...

...but being a frothing loon never helps.

9. everyone feels anger- They were no exception. It isn't the anger that is the problem-
it's the manipulation of angry people that is the problem.
MLKjr. and Gandhi didn't need to incite anger in those that followed and marched beside them. They didn't go looking for friction. They were looking for equal access, and justice, and when that was met with violence, they didn't invoke or encourage anger- they DIScouraged it.
MLKjr. took quite a bit of heat from many who were frustrated with his insistence on NON-violence. He got angry- he didn't get violent- or encourage violence or malicious actions against anyone.

Beck is a fool- a malicious one. He says a lot of things that are completely untrue. People who believe him, want to believe him. The truth is there- for anyone to find. No one has any excuse for believing anything Beck says, without confirming it to be the truth- which most don't.

12. Relevant quote from Gandhi:
"I have learned through bitter experience the one supreme lesson to conserve my anger, and as heat conserved is transmuted into energy, even so our anger controlled can be transmuted into a power which can move the world."
— from Gandhi the Man, by Eknath Easwaran, Nilgiri Press.

I would say Gandhi learned to channel his anger to accomplish positive ends.
